MIUT 60 – Madeira Island Ultra-Trail Races

Running

The MIUT 60 starts in the center of Boa Ventura, one of the oldest villages on the island of Madeira. From the coast, you gradually sink into the valley. The first kilometers pass quietly before the slope no longer rises seriously.

The first and main ascent of the route begins on the Urzal trail. It takes you through lush vegetation until you climb to the Torrinhas pass where a magnificent panorama awaits you. You evolve on a spectacular path that winds along a ridge and leads you to the foot of the highest point of the island: Pico Ruivo.

Your progression continues towards Pico Arieiro, recognizable by the large white ball on its summit. The spectacular path that leads you there offers breathtaking views of the peaks of the island, while taking improbable tunnels carved into the rock.

A long downhill section then begins towards Porto da Cruz. As you descend, the vegetation becomes denser and the levadas (irrigation canals) simplify your progress.

Porto da Cruz is one of the most beautiful villages on the island. Leaving it, you approach a magnificent passage that winds along impressive cliffs before emerging into the Machico Valley.

New levadas take care of bringing you back without too much effort to the heights of the village before concluding with a short descent to find the pretty seafront which marks the end of your adventure.

Ninho da Manta Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Ninho da Manta viewpoint is located just a few meters from the start of the Vereda do Areeiro route (PR1), one of the most famous hikes in Madeira. It has therefore become an obligatory stop, both for hikers setting off from here to the island's highest peak and for visitors to Pico do Areeiro.
This observation point next to the Pousada do Pico do Areeiro was called Ninho da Manta because a common buzzard (Buteo buteo), a bird of prey, supposedly nested there. You can see the municipality of São Roque do Faial and the valley of Fajã da Nogueira, the preferred nesting site of the shearwater (Puffinus puffinus).
Likewise, from the Ninho da Manta viewpoint you can see part of the central mountain range of Madeira. The landscape is dominated by impressive rock formations that often rise above the clouds. The endemic species of the Madeira petrel (Pterodroma madeira), which is considered the most threatened lake, also nests here

Viewpoint on Porto da Cruz

Highlight • Viewpoint

Along the charming Levada da Portela, it's worth taking a moment to appreciate the landscape: between the hidden corners of the vegetation, this stunning view of Porto da Cruz and its jagged coastline reveals itself, down below, between blue sky and cliffs.

Yellow Ridge

Highlight • Viewpoint

Suddenly you are in front of the 400 m steep cliff coast and looks down on the deep blue sea. We saw in the depths in the most impossible places cultivated terraced fields, which could be reached only by extraordinarily adventurous lifts. Unforgettable.

Machico Beach

Highlight • Beach

Machico Bay combines history and beauty in a single setting. It was here that the first sailors arrived in Madeira in 1419. Surrounded by verdant mountains that slope gently down to the sea, it boasts a pebble beach and another with golden sand brought from Morocco (a rarity on the island). The marina and small pier add a cosmopolitan touch to this natural amphitheater carved between green and blue.
