Running

The MIUT 42 soars from the heights of the city of Funchal, the emblematic capital of the island of Madeira. The official start is near the magnificent Botanical Gardens which are accessible by cable car.

Get ready, because from the first meters you climb. Indeed, the first section of the route is uphill to Chão da Lagoa. Along the way, you pass Terreiro da Luta on Pico Alto, before entering the Ecological Park of Funchal. Don't forget to turn around to appreciate the panoramas of the city below.

Then it's a long downhill portion that takes you to the pretty little village of Porto da Cruz, passing through Portela in particular. This one, gentler than the climb, allows you to unwind on pleasant passages that alternate between paths and levadas (irrigation canals), in lush vegetation. On the way, lean your head between the trees to guess the magnificent panoramas that stretch over the coastline.

Arrived at Porto da Cruz, a superb portion on the side of the cliff awaits you before plunging into the Machico valley. Let yourself be guided by new levadas which take you to the heights of the village. At the cost of a last somewhat steep descent, you have arrived on the superb seafront of Machico.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

Highlight • Natural

A beautiful landscaped botanical garden, as is typical for Madeira, of course not at ground level. There are many stairs, narrow paths but also wider paths on which you can explore the different themed areas of the botanical garden. At the lower end there is a cafe with a beautiful view over Funchal. Worth seeing 🌴🌸🌺☀️

Viewpoint on Porto da Cruz

Highlight • Viewpoint

Along the charming Levada da Portela, it's worth taking a moment to appreciate the landscape: between the hidden corners of the vegetation, this stunning view of Porto da Cruz and its jagged coastline reveals itself, down below, between blue sky and cliffs.

Yellow Ridge

Highlight • Viewpoint

Suddenly you are in front of the 400 m steep cliff coast and looks down on the deep blue sea. We saw in the depths in the most impossible places cultivated terraced fields, which could be reached only by extraordinarily adventurous lifts. Unforgettable.

Levada do Canical

Highlight • Trail

Madeira's levadas are a true masterpiece of ancient engineering. Created in the 15th century, these stone veins capture water from the humid mountains and carry it, kilometer after kilometer, to the island's drier fields. There are over 2,200 km of canals and 40 km of hand-dug tunnels, many of them in terrain so steep that workers had to be suspended by ropes. It was an epic effort to tame the water and make it flow where it was most needed.

The Levada do Caniçal is a beautiful example of this ingenuity and also offers an incredible view of Machico.

Machico Beach

Highlight • Beach

Machico Bay combines history and beauty in a single setting. It was here that the first sailors arrived in Madeira in 1419. Surrounded by verdant mountains that slope gently down to the sea, it boasts a pebble beach and another with golden sand brought from Morocco (a rarity on the island). The marina and small pier add a cosmopolitan touch to this natural amphitheater carved between green and blue.
