This route was planned by komoot.
You can typically find parking at or near the Trentham Estate, which the trail passes through. It's a circular route, so you'll return to your starting point. Be sure to check any parking fees or restrictions for the Trentham Estate.
The trail is rated as moderate due to inclines, some of which are described as 'a bit steep', and potentially muddy sections. While not excessively long, the varied terrain and road crossings mean it's best suited for those with some hiking experience or active families comfortable with longer walks and elevation changes. It's not recommended for wheels.
Expect a varied mix of terrain, including lanes, wooded paths, and field paths. There's also a section along a canal towpath. Be prepared for inclines, as some parts are steep, and muddy conditions, especially after rain. Walking poles can be helpful.
The trail offers diverse scenery and notable landmarks. You'll pass through King's Wood, Trentham Estate, cross Trentham Golf Course, and enjoy views of the countryside. A significant highlight is the Duke of Sutherland Monument and View of Trentham Estate. You'll also encounter the Spring Valley Footbridge and Steps and skirt the Monkey Forest, where you might spot monkeys.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly as it follows public footpaths. However, please keep dogs on a lead, especially when passing through fields with livestock, near the Monkey Forest, and within sections of the Trentham Estate where specific rules may apply. Always clean up after your dog.
While the trail uses public rights of way, sections of it pass through or near the Trentham Estate. Access to certain parts of the estate, such as the main Trentham Gardens, typically requires an entrance fee. However, the public footpaths forming this circular route generally do not require a separate permit, though parking fees may apply.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring is particularly lovely when the woods are scattered with bluebells. Autumn offers beautiful foliage. Be aware that sections can be muddy, especially during wetter seasons, so appropriate footwear is essential. In winter, dress warmly and be prepared for potentially slippery conditions.
The trail passes through or near villages like Tittensor and Barlaston, which may offer local amenities. Given its proximity to the Trentham Estate, you'll also find various cafes and eateries within the estate grounds or nearby, perfect for a post-hike refreshment.
Yes, this circular route is a part of the wider Trent Valley Way, a long-distance footpath. It also intersects with sections of the Two Saints Way. You'll find yourself on official trails like the Trent Valley Way for a significant portion of the hike.
The trail requires crossing the busy A34 road on two occasions. Please exercise caution and be vigilant when navigating these crossings to ensure your safety.
Yes, the diverse scenery, including woods and fields, provides opportunities for wildlife spotting. You might see various birds, and as the trail skirts the Monkey Forest, there's a chance to spot monkeys in the trees. In spring, the woods are a fantastic place to see bluebells.
I was devestated when i found the trak closed half way round. Its closed from August to May. What a disapointment.
An enjoyable stroll through the woods and Monument Hill was particularly impressive with great views. Didn't enjoy the walk back to the car along a very busy dual carriageway. I had planned to walk back alongside Trentham Lake but this is only accessible if you pay the park entrance fee (which I suspected may be the case, but wasn't sure). So, if you're planning this route it is best to double check which routes on the komoot planner are free to access and which can only be accessed via the Trentham Estate entrance fee and what times they are open etc...
I've wanted to walk up the Duke of Sutherland monument for ages, I've kept seeing it from the A34. I got up there but didn't realise the PF from the monument, continuing through King's Wood is completely closed from 31st Aug - 31st May for conservation grazing. I had to retrace my steps part way to reach the main track and continue on that until I got to the Monkey Forest entrance. Thanks @Chris & Lexi I pinched your route 🤗, I changed it slightly so as to walk along Barlaston Old Road and then through Trentham Golf Course rather than straight up the A34. I'm glad I did, I saw some great houses and met a really interesting lady who told me loads of history about one house in particular, that is situated throygh the golf course.
