This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts in Salins-les-Bains. While specific parking lots aren't detailed, you can usually find parking within the town, especially near the historic center or the Grande Saline, which is a common starting point for routes in the area.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it passes through diverse landscapes including forests, fields, and potentially near livestock, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially in sensitive areas or when encountering other hikers.
The trail is best enjoyed during spring, summer, and early autumn. These seasons offer pleasant weather for hiking and clearer views from Mont Poupet. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear due to potential snow and ice, especially on the steeper sections and at higher elevations.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Salins-les-Bains and Mont Poupet Trail itself. Access to the natural areas is free.
The terrain is quite varied, transitioning from the historic town of Salins-les-Bains to lush greenery, vineyards, fields, and forests. You'll encounter a mix of paved and unpaved surfaces, including stony paths. The ascent to Mont Poupet includes some particularly steep sections, with the last 4 kilometers having inclines up to 15%.
The trail offers several notable sights. You'll start in Salins-les-Bains, home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Grande Saline. As you ascend, the primary highlights are the panoramic 360-degree views from Mont Poupet and the Croix de Poupet. On clear days, you can see the Jura plains and mountains, and even catch a glimpse of Mont Blanc in the distance. Mont Poupet is also historically significant as a site for Louis Pasteur's experiments.
This hike is approximately 15.4 kilometers long with about 591 meters of elevation gain. Komoot estimates the duration to be around 4 hours and 50 minutes, but this can vary based on individual fitness levels and how often you stop to enjoy the views. Some sources suggest it can take closer to 5 hours and 55 minutes.
While rated 'moderate' by Komoot, some sections of this trail, particularly the ascent to Mont Poupet, are quite steep and challenging. It involves a significant elevation gain. Therefore, it might be strenuous for very young children or beginner hikers without a good level of fitness. Families with older, experienced hikers should be fine.
Yes, Salins-les-Bains is a thermal town with amenities. You'll find various options for accommodation, cafes, and restaurants within the town, especially near the starting point of the trail. It's a good place to refuel before or after your hike.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. Notably, it covers a significant portion of the 'Salins les Bains et le Mont Poupet' trail (95%) and also passes through sections of 'Le Zed Jurassien' (36%), 'L’Échappée Jurassienne à vtt-section 1' (29%), and 'Le Sentier des Gabelous' (28%).
Beyond its stunning panoramic views from Mont Poupet, this trail is unique for its blend of natural beauty and historical significance. It starts in Salins-les-Bains, home to a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Mont Poupet itself is famous for Louis Pasteur's scientific experiments. It also offers a diverse landscape, from historic townscapes to vineyards and forests, and is a popular spot for paragliding.
On the last day, which we used for an excursion here in Doubs/Jura, there should be some more beautiful views. But we didn't fancy a long journey from Besançon, e.g. to the High Jura. When we drove through Salins-les-Bains on the way back from the Lison spring, we immediately noticed the pretty location of the town between the surrounding mountains. So we took a trip from the town up the local mountain Mont Poupet, from where we could enjoy beautiful views in all directions from various vantage points. There was a lot of asphalt up to Saint-Thiébaud, but also a section along a "voie verte" that was separated from the relatively busy country road by rocks - you almost didn't notice the cars. From Saint-Thiébaud we then continued along well-marked paths, with a few exceptions. The signage was also complete. Enjoyed the view, reached the goal, at the end I went off alone for a short while to look at Fort Belin; the others were fed up with climbing and instead looked for an ice cream parlor (and found one - much to my delight later on)
