Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Long Draw Trail?

This is an extremely challenging route, not a traditional trail. It's a steep gully, sometimes called 'Devil's Slide,' plunging 1,600 to 1,800 feet over just 0.6 to 1 mile with a constant 40-degree gradient. Expect loose rock scree, boulders, and rock ledges up to 8 feet high requiring scrambling. You'll often need to use your hands for climbing.

Do I need a permit to hike this trail?

Yes, wilderness permits are required for this hike and are issued on a limited basis by the National Park Service. It is a day-use-only trail, meaning no overnight wilderness permits are available for Long Draw. You can find more information on the NPS website.

How long does it take to hike the Long Draw Trail?

The National Park Service estimates it takes approximately 1.5 hours for the descent and about three hours for the strenuous climb back up to the rim. This does not include time spent at the bottom.

What safety precautions should I take on the trail?

Due to the extreme steepness and loose rock, rockfall is a significant hazard, so wearing a helmet is highly recommended. Poison ivy is also present along the route, so wearing long pants is advisable. Proper footwear with excellent grip is crucial for navigating the challenging terrain.

What can I expect to see along the route?

The scenery is dramatic and awe-inspiring. As you descend, the towering cliffs of the Black Canyon become prominent. The trail leads to "The Narrows," one of the tightest and most spectacular sections of the canyon. You'll get incredible views of the powerful Gunnison River and the immense, sheer, dark canyon walls. Highlights include Balanced Rock, Black Canyon of the Gunnison and a View of The Narrows, Black Canyon.

Is the Long Draw Trail dog-friendly?

Due to the extreme difficulty, rugged terrain, and National Park regulations for inner canyon routes, this trail is generally not suitable or permitted for dogs. Always check the latest regulations on the National Park Service website before planning your visit with pets.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is typically accessible from spring through fall. Summer can be very hot, especially at the bottom of the canyon. Spring and fall offer more moderate temperatures, but always check weather conditions as the canyon environment can be unpredictable. Winter hiking is not recommended due to snow, ice, and extreme conditions.

Where is the trailhead for Long Draw Trail and what are the parking options?

The Long Draw Trail is located on the North Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Specific trailhead parking information can be found on the National Park Service website, as access points and parking can vary or require specific permits.

Are there entrance fees for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park?

Yes, there are entrance fees to access Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. These fees contribute to the maintenance and operations of the park. You can find current fee information and pass options on the NPS website.

What makes the Long Draw Trail unique compared to other canyon routes?

This trail is notable for its extreme nature and the unique access it provides to the inner Black Canyon. It is one of only a few unmaintained routes from the rim to the Gunnison River, offering an unparalleled perspective of the canyon's immense scale. The experience of being at the bottom, surrounded by the roaring river and sheer cliffs, is often described as making one feel incredibly small.

Is there an easier alternative to experience the Black Canyon from the North Rim?

While the Long Draw Trail offers an unparalleled inner canyon experience, it is not for the faint of heart. For those seeking less strenuous options, the North Rim offers several rim trails and viewpoints that provide spectacular views into the canyon without the extreme descent. These include short, paved, or well-maintained dirt trails to various overlooks.
