Riedenburg Drei-Burgen-Steig (Three Castles Trail) in Altmühltal Nature Park

Very nice, short but strenuous hike, often very steep paths. But you have a very nice view of the Altmühltal and Riedenburg. Surefootedness is absolutely necessary

Today was my first hike with my best friend. We just wanted to do a bit of shopping in Riedenburg. After an iced coffee, we wanted to go for a walk. Unfortunately, we were wearing the wrong shoes... sandals. Totally unsuitable! Never again 🙈 Still, it was beautiful up by the castles again. Great hike. I highly recommend it.

A very beautiful path along the Tachenstein and Rabenstein ruins to Rosenburg Castle. And the crowning highlight is the falconry at the castle with a flight show. And don't forget the beer garden and the castle museum.

In Riedenburg you come across medieval castles and ruins in a very small space. The position of the buildings, high up on the rock massifs, is always puzzling as to how this was achieved with the resources available at the time. There was not much left of the Tachenstein and Rabenstein castles, but you could still get an idea of the extent of the complex at the time. Very interesting and also a beautiful view, which would have been worth the rather impassable path up for alone.

✨ Start of the hiking year 2025: The Three Castles Trail in Riedenburg ✨ Our first hike in the new year takes us directly into the beautiful Altmühltal, on the Three Castles Trail in Riedenburg. A small but fine circular tour that offers plenty of castle adventures in just a few kilometers - provided you take the time to discover everything! The path leads to three impressive castles or their ruins: 🏰 Tachenstein ruins - with a fantastic view over Riedenburg and the Main-Danube Canal. 🏰 Rabenstein ruins - another vantage point that will make every hiker's heart beat faster. 🏰 Rosenburg - unfortunately closed in winter, but an eye-catcher even from the outside. The route is very well signposted and there are exciting information boards along the way that tell stories about the region, its geology and nature.

For our hike in the Altmühl Valley today, we chose Riedenburg because there are three castles and ruins to visit here. First of all: How and where Kommot got the time information (in this case, 35 minutes) is a mystery to us. We were on the trail for a good two hours. The climb to the Rabenstein castle ruins is quite challenging, going up over rooty paths. According to the signs, it's 20 minutes alone. But the view😲 - it's truly worth every drop of sweat. And the rest of the walk as well. The falconry demonstrations at Rosenburg Castle are at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. We were too late for the first one and two hours early for the second. According to "witness statements"😉, however, it's absolutely worth seeing. We then descended via Tachenburg Castle.
