On the heights of Ax-les-Thermes

This loop of around ten kilometers leads to the summit of Sarrat de l'Étang at an altitude of 1,127 metres. Along the way, you will discover the rock of the Virgin, Lake Campauleil and the village of Orgeix before returning to your starting point in Ax-les-Thermes.

Located in Ariège, Ax-les-Thermes is a mountain village with character. Its tourist offer includes a spa, a summer resort, an excursion center and a winter sports resort. Something to satisfy sports and nature lovers all year round.

The route starts from the Ax-les Thermes train station which is on the Pyrenees line of the Occitanie Rail Tour. Take advantage of the center of the village to find the lunch that you will savor higher up in the mountain.

You start by climbing on the rock of the Virgin which constitutes a beautiful belvedere on the village. You embark for a pretty plateau where the lake of Campauleil is located. This beautiful body of water is nestled in the hollow of the mountains. You go up along its peaceful banks until you reach Orgeix.

From the village begins a sharp ascent towards the Sarrat de l'Étang. Along the way, remember to turn around to appreciate the beautiful view of Orgeix. At the top, the vegetation opens up to offer a vast panorama over the Oriège valley.

You close this loop with a pleasant path that wanders through the forest before leading to Ax-les-Thermes. Relieve your feet in the Roman baths before taking the train again!
