The Camargue nature reserve is an exceptional natural park straddling the departments of Gard and Bouches-du-Rhône. With its vast expanses of marshes, lagoons and wild meadows, the region offers incomparable natural beauty and unique biodiversity.

Breathtaking landscapes, panoramas as far as the eye can see over the salt marshes, ponds, rivers and forests... This is what awaits you on this Camargue bike tour. The opportunity to get closer to a rich and varied fauna, with flamingos, bulls and wild horses.

Departing from Aigues-Mortes, served by the Camargue line, we first suggest that you take a short walk in town. Its ramparts are a real must in the region. Then, this loop takes the cycle route 65. Following the Petit Rhône, you arrive at the southernmost point of the natural park, along the Gulf of Beauduc in the Mediterranean. Lighthouses, ponds, salt marshes... The nuggets you come across are numerous!

You then head north, between the Fournelet pond and the Tour du Valat nature reserve. Then you go around the vast Vaccarès pond by tracks that bring you back to Aigues-Mortes.

This route is 110 kilometers long: it is quite a long distance. Do not hesitate to start early and bring a picnic and enough water. Take advantage of the surroundings and make stops, but without losing sight of the watch in order to have enough light for the return.

Aigues-Mortes

Highlight • Settlement

In the heart of the Camargue stand the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes, a medieval city. This city marked successively by the history of the Crusades and the Templars then by the wars of religion is today a city where it is good to stroll.

In the 17th century its port was the most powerful on the Mediterranean coast. Born from the desire of Louis IX to develop maritime trade, the city displays medieval architecture which was once intended to protect the Kingdom of France from invaders from the East.

Discover the Constance Tower, visit the Notre-Dame-des-Sablons church, stroll around Place Saint-Louis or even explore the chapel of the brotherhood of the Gray Penitents. Above all, don’t forget to taste the local fougasse. I recommend the one from Poitavin Frères which will delight your taste buds!

Camargue Salt Flats

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Camargue is home to the fleur de sel, the fine, mineral-rich and crispy salt crystals that every gourmet is familiar with. Here the salt is not produced industrially, but with the help of the sea and the sun, just like 2,000 years ago. An impressive craft!

Bataiyolles Pond

Highlight • Lake

Bound to the north by the narrow gravel path of the Digue à la mer, the Étang de Bataiyolles is a great place to get away from roads and people, and to come close to the rosy flamingos typically fishing in this area.

Along the Étang du Fournelet

Highlight (Segment) • Other

Here we find a beautiful dirt road between the pond of Fournelet and the regional nature reserve of the Tour du Valat. It is a peaceful site with wonderful views left and right.

A superb gravel track runs alongside the Vaccarès lagoon. The track is in poor condition in places. I recommend having tires with a width greater than 40 millimeters for comfort. This approximately ten-kilometer section has no refreshment points. Remember to bring water with you.
