While officially rated as moderate, this trail has significant challenging sections. It requires good physical fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes. Some parts, especially along cliff edges and steep scree, are best suited for experienced hikers and are not recommended for young children.
The terrain is quite varied, featuring a mix of natural, unpaved paths, rocky passages, and areas with dense brush. You will encounter steep scree (éboulis) and sections along cliff edges, some without protective barriers. Very little of the route is on asphalt.
The trail offers magnificent 360-degree views, including the sea, the Cévennes mountains, and the prominent Panoramic view of Pic Saint-Loup. You'll reach the Hortus Summit for grand vistas of Pic Saint-Loup. The ruins of the 12th-century Viviourès Castle are also a notable historical feature.
The loop starts from the Col de Fambétou. Hikers typically park near this col to begin the trail. Specific parking facilities are not detailed, but it's generally accessible by car to the starting point.
The trail's varied and sometimes challenging terrain, including rocky passages, dense brush, and cliff edges, means it might not be suitable for all dogs. If you bring your dog, ensure they are agile, well-behaved, and kept on a leash, especially in exposed areas. There are no explicit restrictions mentioned, but caution is advised.
While not explicitly stated, considering the dense brush, rocky passages, and potential for heat, spring and autumn are generally ideal for hiking in this region. These seasons offer more moderate temperatures and clearer conditions, making the challenging sections more manageable. Avoid extreme heat or wet conditions which can make scree and cliff edges more hazardous.
There is no information indicating that permits or entrance fees are required to hike The corniche de l'Hortus – loop from the col de Fambétou.
Yes, some sections are quite challenging. There are parts with steep scree (éboulis) and areas along cliff edges, some without protective barriers, which require careful navigation. A 'secret secondary cornice' variant is described as difficult, exposed, and airy, with narrow and dizzying passages. These sections are best reserved for experienced hikers.
Given the varied and sometimes challenging terrain, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential. Due to dense brush and rough passages, a small, compact bag is recommended. Always carry sufficient water, especially during warmer months, and be prepared for changing weather conditions. Trekking poles can be helpful for stability on scree and descents.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Chemin de la corniche (inférieur), Chemin de la corniche (supérieur), and Pas du Loup.
Due to sections along cliff edges, some without protective barriers, and challenging terrain including steep scree, this trail is generally unsuitable for young children. It is best reserved for experienced hikers with good physical fitness and sure-footedness.
Superb hike with beautiful views of Pic St Loup and the Séranne and the sea. We did it in the opposite direction. The Hortus Ridge in the morning and return path below between the Hortus Ridge and Pic St-Loup. ATTENTION: On the last part when crossing the road, the path indicated is private! go further south to go around the house or take the road (more dangerous) to reach the Col.
