Mtb in the Stelvio National Park. Tour of Lake Cancano, Val Alpisella and Alpe Trela in Alta Valtellina. Read the full story: https://www.lifeintravel.it/alta-valtellina-mtb-cancano-alpisella-trela.html
Nice ride but better to do it in reverse. Unless you have an electric then the slopes are not important
A great loop from Livigno to the neighboring valley. Super steep ascent, we were through that the first time, but were then rewarded further up with breathtaking nature. Different around every corner: once super rugged rocks, dizzying abyss then scree field - only stones and behind everything green, alpine meadows with happy cows. And you can still cycle the best at 2300m 🤪 Great feeling !!
Departure from Livigno, towards the lake. Proceed with the Alpisella pass, sections with an average gradient of 15%. Ascent of about 7 km, at a certain point it is possible to take a single track on the left, following the indications for the sources of the Adda. You arrive at Lake Cancano, from there you can go around and take the path towards the Trela pass. From the refuge begins a nice ups and downs with raises and flow descents towards Livigno.
Today a splendid day, off in the saddle of the Bersagliera 😆 with the destination around the lakes of San Giacomo and Cancano with return to Livigno from Passo Trela. I have always done the first ascent to Passo Alpisella on foot, it was the first time I climbed it on my bike but I knew the difficulty of the second part because I had already seen cyclists trudging uphill and inexperienced e-bikers stop 😅. I was able to ride it in one breath 🥵, my heart always on the threshold but I reached the top of the pass with enormous satisfaction. After a beautiful descent to the lakes, I turned them both on the beautiful dirt path that goes all around, including the dams. The show is unique😍. After circunnavigating the lakes I took the path that leads to Malga Trela. Komoot gave me a stretch where I would have pushed the bike by hand, it was a considerable climb, but the surface was not particularly damaged and despite the slopes I did it all in the saddle. Before arriving at the Malga Trela you are on a beautiful plateau with the malga in the distance. From the hut starts the climb with ups and downs on the path that leads to the Passo di Val Trela, beautiful with some uphill stretches but manageable. The difference with all the paths traveled before is that it becomes quite narrow and exposed. Once you reach the pass, a nice downhill trail begins, first among the rocks, then gradually entering the woods. I state that on the descent I am very cautious and I do not have a great technique, but from the other reviews on the track I was expecting something simpler and more "flow" what I think they do not specify is that in the first part it is indeed a fairly path sliding, it has only some points a little broken and steep where you have to put a bit of technique but you must always drive with concentration because it has various exposed points on rather steep walls. After the first part you are back on a wide and very smooth path, after reaching a bridge you take the final stretch in the woods where at the beginning there is a small climb with a couple of very tight hairpin bends (immense satisfaction to make them in the saddle), even if the path is in the woods it must always be guided with concentration because above all at the beginning even here there are various exposed sections on very steep slopes.
After yesterday's shopping day, today's final tour in Livigno was in beautiful photogenic weather. 😍 Because last time was sooo strenuous 😉, we went over the Alpisella again. And because last time was sooo beautiful, we took the trail past the source of the Adda to Lago di San Giacomo again. We enjoyed a delicious cake at the Rifugio Val Fraele on the northern side of the dam. We then crossed the dam, rode along the lake, and turned off into Valle Pettini. The gravel road winds ever steeper up to the Valle Corta gorge to Malga Trela. We accidentally took the old route on the left up to Passo di Val Trela; following it is not recommended, as the path is barely visible anymore. A fantastic trail down to Lago di Livigno today, including a quick shower.⛈️🌨️
