Embark on the Gargano Scenic Coast Loop, a difficult road cycling adventure spanning 58.2 miles (93.7 km) with a substantial 6563 feet (2000 metres) of elevation gain. This route, typically completed in 5 hours and 10 minutes, immerses you in the dramatic landscapes of the Gargano National Park. You will cycle past olive groves and pine forests, where the vibrant green meets the deep blue of the Adriatic Sea. Look out for the striking white cliffs and secluded coves that define this coastline. A highlight includes panoramic vistas like the View of the Arch of San Felice, offering memorable photo opportunities.
Prepare for significant elevation changes on this challenging loop. The initial 18 kilometres between Vieste and Mattinata involve a constant climb, gaining 700 metres. While much of the route is well-paved, be aware that some segments, especially on downhill sections, might have damaged or unpaved asphalt. This demanding road cycling experience is best suited for those with very good fitness and prior experience.
This loop takes you along the scenic La Litoranea and Statale Garganica roads, showcasing the unique beauty of the Parco Nazionale del Gargano. As you ride, you might spot traditional "trabucchi" fishing structures dotting the coastline, a testament to the region's heritage. The route offers a rewarding journey for experienced cyclists seeking both a physical challenge and stunning coastal scenery.

This loop tour is classified as difficult, requiring very good fitness. It features significant elevation changes, with approximately 2,000 meters of gain over 93.7 kilometers. The route includes a consistent 18 km climb gaining 700 meters between Vieste and Mattinata.
The route primarily follows well-paved roads, but be prepared for some segments where the asphalt might be damaged or even unpaved, especially on downhill sections. The topography is consistently undulating with substantial ascents and descents.
You'll experience stunning coastal views, including white cliffs, an emerald sea, and picturesque bays. Notable viewpoints include the View of the Arch of San Felice, the View of Cala della Pergola from the Panoramic Road, and the Scenic Road and Coastal Views on the Garganica (Vieste–Mattinata). The route also passes through olive groves, pine forests, and offers glimpses of the lush inland forests of the Gargano National Park.
While specific parking areas are not detailed, you can typically find parking in the towns of Vieste or Mattinata, which serve as common starting points for tours in the Parco Nazionale del Gargano. Look for public parking facilities within these towns.
No, this is a difficult road cycling tour with significant elevation gain and distance, making it unsuitable for beginners or young families. It requires very good fitness and experience with challenging road rides.
The best time to cycle this route is generally during the spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October) when the weather is milder and more pleasant for cycling. Summers can be very hot, and winters might bring less predictable weather.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for cycling on public roads within the Parco Nazionale del Gargano. However, always respect local regulations and protected areas. For detailed information, you can check the official Italian tourism website at www.italia.it.
As this is a road cycling tour primarily on public roads, dogs are generally permitted if they are safely secured (e.g., in a bike trailer or basket). However, always ensure your pet's safety and comfort, especially given the challenging nature of the route and potential traffic.
Yes, the route briefly intersects with sections of other paths, including the Sentiero dei Pellegrini di San Michele Arcangelo, Coppa Fusillo - Torre di Sagro, and Valle Tacca del Lupo - La Baracca, among others. These are mostly short overlaps with official trails.
The route passes through or near towns like Vieste and Mattinata, where you can find cafes, restaurants, and shops for refreshments. However, given the length and challenging nature of the tour, it's advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks, especially for sections between towns.
Given the tour's difficulty and length, you should bring plenty of water, energy snacks, a repair kit for your bike, appropriate cycling attire for varying weather conditions, sun protection, and a fully charged phone. A GPS device or the komoot app is also highly recommended for navigation.
Another beautiful tour, from a landscape point of view, perhaps the most beautiful. Be careful though, it must be done in an anti-clockwise direction because, by doing so, you travel the more than 20 km of climb that lead to the Valico del Lupo inside the south-western offshoot of the Umbra Forest and therefore largely in the shade. Getting to the pass from Mattinata, especially on very hot days, would be much harder (see graph) by doing so you can enjoy the beautiful panorama. The coastal road between Mattinata and Vieste is a continuous up and down made very challenging by the heat. The beauty of the many bays that you encounter and the descent to Pugnochiuso are worth the price of so much effort. The roads deserve a special mention, well maintained and, for the most part, recently asphalted. (my mouth shut up)
Really great route on the edge of the national park. Perfect weather and quiet roads. The section on the SP 54 was extremely beautiful!
