Gravel riding

If you’re looking for a big day out on the bike, don’t mind a bit of hike-a-bike and love finding opportunities for a mid-ride dip, this is the Tour for you.

From the city of Olbia you head south on wide gravel doubletracks through farmland, past a granite tomb that dates back over 4,000 years, and up into the mountains via Padru.

A dead-end, empty tarmac road takes you most of the way up climb, before turning onto a 25-minute technical hike up and over the pass on a steep and narrow hiking trail.

With views of the sea ahead, you hike down the steepest part of the track for another 30-60 minutes, before taking the more rideable singletrack to the waterfalls on Rio Pitrisconi in the Monte Nieddu conservation area.

Take a dip in the mountain pools before the mega gravel descent leads you down off the mountains to the sea at San Teodoro. There are plenty of places here for a decent meal or snack, and you can visit the golden sands of Spiaggia La Cinta for a saltier swim if you prefer. Keep an eye out as you pass the lagoon next, as flamingoes can often be seen here in summer.

The return leg takes you on tarmac back up past Monte Utara Pisana and north towards Olbia, finishing with some great gravel farm tracks near the airport, passing by fields of ginger Sardo cattle.

Sublime gravel tracks out of Olbia

Highlight • Cycleway

There are some delightful gravel doubletrack roads just a stone's throw from Olbia airport that lead you south to the mountains. Running between fields of grazing cattle and sheep, these roads are pretty well surfaced and offer amazing views of the mountaintops and Su Monte de s'Ape.

Tomb of the Giants Su Mont'e S'Abe

Highlight • Historical Site

Named the 'Tomb of the Giants' due to its enormous size, this Middle Bronze Age burial tomb is well worth a stop to explore.

The first iteration of the granite tomb is belived to have been constructed over 4,000 years ago, with later additions in around 1,600 BC.

River crossing

Highlight • River

The track fords the river (Riu de su Piricone) here, so you might end up getting your feet wet! When we crossed the river was high due to three days of rain prior, though that was unusual so I would imagine that it would usually be much lower. As always, take care when crossing rivers and don't take unnecessary risks.

Hike-a-bike over the mountain pass

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

This 1.5 hour hike-a-bike starts from the dead end road climb from Padru, heading eastwards up and over the pass towards the coast. It's a tough one, but very worthwhile.

The singletrack hiking path is narrow and technical; steep with rocky granite boulders and streams after the rain. It's plenty grippy enough though, and doable if you take it steady. It took us 25 minutes from the road up to the top, and just under an hour down the other side until it became rideable again.

The reward? A marvellous string of mountain waterfalls and natural pools in the Monte Nieddu conservation area, not to mention the mega descent to the sea.

Fantastic the experience is worth it. But not suitable for everyone. Descent waterfall not without danger.

Farmland gravel tracks

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Great wide, easy going and flowing flat gravel roads between the fields. Get off the main roads and closer to nature along these quiet roads, where you'll also see plenty of native Sardinian cattle.
