This tour, which starts and ends at Arnhem train station, is 63.5 kilometers long and therefore suitable for advanced cyclists. Dive into the rich history this area has to offer, from the Ice Age to World War II.
Ever since the ice age, when the ferocious meltwater river, the Proto-Rhine, flowed into the Netherlands, this area has been the most important water access point in our country. It was a vital lifeline for the development of the region. Because where there is water, there is trade and activity.
You depart from Arnhem station and cycle along the beautiful city beaches, where you can take a break and enjoy the view over the water. You will then pass Castle Doornenburg, an imposing medieval structure that invites you to take a step back in time. Here you can taste the atmosphere of life in a distant past.
After the castle you continue your route through the river landscape of the Gelderse Poort. This area is known for its unique flora and fauna and offers breathtaking views over the floodplains. It is an ideal place to relax for a while.
Along the way you will also pass Huis Loowaard, a historic country house that dates back to the 17th century. This estate still exudes the atmosphere of the past and is an interesting stop on your cycling tour. Take the time to explore the beautiful country house and its surroundings.
The highlight of the route is Fort Westervoort, located at the junction of the Rhine and the Waal. This fort played an important role in the defense of the Netherlands during World War II.
You end up back in Arnhem, where you can easily take the train home. Or stay another night in this cozy old town. You will also find a spacious parking lot on the station square.
