Running

Hampstead Heath is an ancient, preserved area of open heathland lying within the boundaries of London. It's perfect for exploring at a run, with a few good hills to train on. Parliament Hill in the south offers great views across to the city, but the highest point is to the north, climbing to 426 ft (130 m).

Our Tour takes you on a 4-mile (6.5 km) loop of the heath. You’ll pass the mixed swimming pond and climb Parliament Hill before descending to the string of ponds on the heath’s eastern edge. At about half-way you’ll reach Kenwood House, which has a well-placed cafe if you fancy a break. The loop finishes by running down the western edge of the heath and back into Hampstead.

Hampstead Heath has a strong running culture, hosting both the English national cross country championships and the popular ‘Night of the 10,000m PBs’ events. Parliament Hill Athletics Track on the southern edge of the heath is a top-class facility with an eight lane, all weather, floodlit track open from 7:30am to dusk every day.

Our Tour starts at Hampstead underground station, but Hampstead Heath mainline station is close by if you’re travelling from further afield.

Hampstead Mixed Pond

Highlight • Lake

As well as the mixed pond, there's the Kenwood ladies' pond and Highgate men's pond, both of which can be found on the eastern edge of the heath. You do have to pay to swim here (or you can buy a season ticket) but you get a clean pond with a lifeguard and changing facilities. Open all year.

Rising to 322 feet (98 m) at its highest point, Parliament Hill is a much-loved viewpoint for Central London. It's named for the view it would have once given towards the Houses of Parliament, though modern development has since masked much of this view. Interestingly, the story goes that, in 1605, Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby planned to watch the foiled destruction of Parliament from this spot. Remember, remember, the 5th of November...

Kenwood House

Highlight • Cafe

Kenwood House is a grand former stately home that was constructed in the 17th century. Today, it stands proud on the northern edge of Hampstead Heath and is home to landscaped gardens, a cafe and a world-class art collection, which includes works by the likes of Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Constable and Turner.

Hampstead Heath is an ancient, preserved area of open heathland within the boundaries of London. It's a brilliant area to explore at a run with some actual hills to train on. Parliament Hill in the south offers great views across to the city but the highest point is to the north at over 426 ft (130 m). It's a great place for open water swimming with a men's, a women's and a mixed pond available. You can swim all year if you fancy it or just aim here on a hot day and cool off mid run.
