Running
The Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) stretches from the Surrey/London border down to Dover’s famous white cliffs. The rare chalk grasslands and woodlands offer stunning running through a wildlife-rich area – look out for many different wildflowers and butterflies if you visit over the summer months. The Knole Estate is a 600-year-old mediaeval deer park, and you’re almost guaranteed to spot the hundreds of freely roaming deer as you run through. At the eastern end of our Tour stands Ightham Mote, a mediaeval moated manor house, built almost 700 years ago.
The outward journey follows the Greensand Way, a waymarked trail that traces the underlying ridgeline of greensand rock for 111 miles (179 km) across Surrey and Kent. The higher ground offers stunning views over the surrounding flatlands to enjoy as you run.
The Tour is 10.5 miles (16.9 km) long with about 853 feet (260 m) of ascent. Underfoot the trail is easy to follow but can be muddy and slippery, especially when wet, so we’d suggest wearing grippy trail shoes and a pack with a spare layer and some water and snacks.
You’ll find cafes at both Knole and Igtham Mote, and more refuelling options near the station in Sevenoaks. There’s also an Up & Running shop on the High Street for any necessary running-related purchases.
If you live locally Sevenoaks Athletics Club welcomes new members and trains regularly in Knole Park.
This Tour starts at Sevenoaks station, about 35 minutes by train from Charing Cross.
