Mountain biking

The Hundstein is a popular 2,117 meter high mountain near Maria Alm. "Cycling" it requires a good level of fitness from you - after all, the approximately 1,310 meters in altitude don't do it by itself. In return, a truly magnificent view of the Hochkönig region awaits you at the summit and the adjacent Hohe Tauern. So it's worth every single bead of sweat!

It starts in the heart of Maria Alm. You leave the charming village and cycle out into nature. You stick to the main road for a while, but soon leave it again. From the Aberg ski center, a forest path takes over and starts to climb nicely.

In front of the grandiose backdrop of the Hochkönig, you pedal up the mountain. It goes once through forest and once over clear sections. After a while and many bends you pass the Grießbachhütte, which invites you to strengthen yourself. Otherwise, you just keep mastering your altitude gain.

Until he opens up in front of you, the Hundstein. At 2,117 meters, the highest mountain in the Salzburg Slate Alps - so you can be very proud of yourself when you reach its summit cross. There is also the Statzerhaus up here, where you can treat yourself to refreshments. Then you can look forward to the long descent back into the valley.

Grießbachalm

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Grießbachalm is only open in summer and is located in the middle of the hiking paradise of Maria Alm. It is the optimal place to take a break on the way to the Statzer Haus. One of the most beautiful and rustic huts we have had the pleasure of discovering so far.

Attention, be sure to note the opening hours: Rest days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. On the remaining days, it is open from 9 am to 5 pm.

Hundstein Summit

Highlight • Summit

At 2,117 meters, the Hundstein is the highest mountain in the Salzburg Slate Alps and the panorama is really impressive.

The view sweeps over the southern slopes of the Steinernes Meer and the Hochkönig. To the south you can see the Hohe Tauern with the Großer Wiesbachhorn and the Hoher Tenn.

At least now you realize why so many cyclists and hikers are drawn to this height.

By car to Maria Alm and then up to the Hundstein. It was a super tour!

Super nice tour on one of the highest grass mountains in Austria. Unfortunately, there was a lot going on on the mountain because the dog stoa fishing was on. But still an experience!
