Castañar del Tiemblo

Highlight • Forest

The San Gregorio Trail ends at the El Regajo recreational area. The trail crosses directly the forest track and enters the most famous chestnut grove in Alto Alberche. Along the way there is an information booth and information panels where the short-distance path PR-AV 54 begins, which runs through the forest in a circular itinerary. The environment changes completely, the previous pine forest gives way to a uniform mass of chestnut trees with some hundred-year-old and monumental specimens, such as the ancient chestnut tree known as El Abuelo, near the Majalavilla Refuge. The route goes up between the chestnut trees and at the first fork it continues straight ahead. The PR-AV 54 path continues to the right towards the Majalavilla Refuge.

Pozo de la Nieve Shelter

Highlight • Monument

The snow well has been restored and recalls one of the secular traditions of the inhabitants of the Alberche valley, when they stored ice in the heights of the mountains to supply the towns in spring and summer. Along with the ethnographic value, the geographical location of the building also stands out, installed in the reception basin on the north slope of the Casillas peak, where an impressive torrent of ice originated that modeled a V-shaped gorge in the Iruelas river, a sample of the most interesting characteristics of the geological values of the nature reserve.
