Newport Millenium Trail – Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

Where the Preseli Hills’ ridge drops to the Irish Sea lies idyllic Newport, a favourite of many who come to enjoy the small town’s relaxed nature and surrounding natural beauty. This walk ventures from the centre onto the flanks of the local “mountain”, Mynydd Carningli, for glorious views back towards the town.

The walk can be accessed via the 412 bus service or the seasonal Poppit Rocket. There are also a couple of car parks in Newport.

Starting at the car park on the estuary, the route begins by heading along Parrog Road towards the town centre. After turning right onto West Street, it then turns left and ascends in the direction of Mynydd Carningli’s rocky apex.

A hike up all the way to the summit is highly recommended for a longer outing, but this route turns east and contours across the hillside just over 620-feet (190 m). In the warmer months, the heathland here is particularly colourful, providing a vibrant foreground to the view back to the estuary.

The route arcs around to the east of the town, taking in some pretty woodland paths, before heading back towards the centre. A quick detour to Carreg Coetan, a 5,500-year-old burial chamber, is well worth it. As well as the cromlech’s mightily impressive age, legend has it that King Arthur played here as a child.

A short and pleasant stroll along the estuary brings you back to the start point.

Gan ddechrau yn y maes parcio ar yr aber, mae'r llwybr yn dechrau drwy deithio ar hyd Heol Parrog tuag at ganol y dref. Ar ôl troi i'r dde ar Heol y Gorllewin, mae'n troi i'r chwith ac yn codi tuag at gopa creigiog Mynydd Carningli.

Argymellir eich bod yn cerdded bob cam i'r copa i gael taith hirach, ond mae'r llwybr hwn yn troi i'r dwyrain ac yn mynd ar draws ochr y bryn ychydig dros 620 o droedfeddi (190 m). Yn ystod y misoedd cynhesach, mae'r rhostir yma’n arbennig o liwgar, gan ddarparu golygfa wefreiddiol yn ôl at yr aber.

Mae ymweliad cyflym â Charreg Coetan, siamber gladdu sy’n dyddio o 5,500 o flynyddoedd yn ôl, yn werth ei wneud. Mae chwedl yn honni bod y Brenin Arthur wedi chwarae yma fel plentyn.
