Church of Saint George the Martyr (Aldea del Rey)

Highlight • Religious Site

This Church was founded by the Order of Calatrava under the invocation of San Jorge Mártir as patron saint of the town and of the Order. It acted as the chapel of the Palacio de la Clavería located behind the Temple. It is a Church from the beginnings of the Modern Age, with additions in all subsequent centuries. It is made up of a single nave covered by a flat ceiling and exposed wooden beams, three chapels on the Gospel side and one on the Epistle side covered by domes. It has a large presbytery and a rectangular apse covered by a crooked dome, a choir at the foot on Tuscan columns and a tower with a 17th-century base with mid-20th-century finials. On the main Altar there is an image of Saint George and below it a crucified Christ carved in wood.

The Hermitage was called in ancient times Nª Sª del Val de Padilla, since it was the XIX Grand Master of the Order of Calatrava who donated the image. His style is sober on the classic Latin Cross with a slender and well-ornamented transept.
