Fan Hir

Highlight • Viewpoint

Fan Hir means long summit in English, which is an apt description for this rather indistinct, long-drawn-out ridge summit that is part of a broader escarpment feature that circumnavigates Llyn y Fan Fawr and Llyn y Fan Fach. It forms the eastern ramparts of the Black Mountain, and its east face is extremely steep. The ridgeline it forms part of makes a great walk all the way back down south to Tafarn y Garreg.

Poised and elegant, Fan Brycheiniog is the climax of a striking escarpment edge in the Black Mountain range of the western Brecon Beacons. From sculpted valleys to pretty tarns, the gently-curved, grassy escarpment – the Carmarthen Fan – provides lovely ridge walking. Nearby Llyn y Fan Fach is famed for the Lady of the Lake legend.

Fan Foel summit

Highlight • Summit

At 2,562 feet (781 m) high, the summit of Fan Foel boasts extensive panoramas of the surrounding peaks and moorland below. Rugged, wild and beautiful, the remote location is an area that few people visit, meaning you often have it all to yourself.

7.84 km

Picws Du, or Bannau Sir Gaer, is the highest point of the dramatic escarpment high above Llyn y Fan Fach. Due to the remote and untouched landscape, you may have the opportunity to see lots of birds, including red kite, common buzzard, kestrel, carrion crow, common raven and skylark.
