Craig-y-Nos Country Park and Castle

Highlight • Lake

Nestled on the banks of the River Tawe, this 40-acre (16 ha) Victorian country park is managed by the Brecon Beacons National Park authority and contains the Grade II-listed Craig-y-Nos Castle. The Castle was once owned by legendary opera singer Andelina Patti, today this impressive building is a hotel.

There are a few other accommodation options in the surrounding area, making Craig-y-Nos an excellent base for exploring both the Black Mountain to the north and the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu Nature Reserve to the east. Closer by, the park’s gentle paths and picturesque lakes are a delight to explore.

Dan-Yr-Ogof Showcaves

Highlight • Cave

The national show caves is a tourist attraction with several ventures including the Shire Horse centre, a life size dinosaur model exhibit, kids play grounds and the three show caves. The caves are awesome, with over 1km of underground passage to explore, waterfalls and large chambers.

Paid entry.

Afon Haffes Riverbed

Highlight • Natural

Awesome section of trail that crosses a river as it flows down some rocks. Careful with footing, some rocks are slippery, and would recommend waterproof footwear for this section.

River Tawe

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Afon Tawe is a great little Welsh river, but a short one at only 30 miles. Its headwaters start just a short way from here, just below Llyn y Fan Fawr. After coming down past Tafarn-y-Garreg, the river will head south to come out in the Swansea estuary. It makes for a nice kayak paddle further down and gives life to the rest of the Swansea Valley as it meanders its way to the sea. Not the greatest or most famous of Welsh rivers, but a beautiful one nonetheless.
