Buckler's Hard

Highlight • Viewpoint

Bucklers Hard is a tiny hamlet on the edge of the Beaulieu River famed for its shipbuilding history. From the early 18th century, a variety of impressive ships were built here, including HMS Surprise and HMS Agamemnon, Napoleon's supposed favourite ship.

During the Second World War, torpedo boats were built here and in non-military history, it was the start and end point for Sir Francis Chichesters solo round-the-world voyage with Gypsy Moth IV.

Today, there's a maritime museum here with fascinating stories and artefacts.

April 19, 2024, Bucklers Hard to Beaulieu with nature reserve diversions by riverside

Easy riverside walk. We did it in both directions having parked @ Bucklers Hard. Worth diverting into the two nature reserves that trail next to the estuary, parallel to the main path. Tea and scones good @ Beaulieu House cafe.
