The Roche des Fées Circuit is a moderate hike that typically takes around 3 hours and 36 minutes to complete. This duration can vary depending on your pace and how much time you spend exploring the highlights along the way.
The trail is classified as a moderate hike, suggesting varied terrain that may include forest paths, some inclines, and potentially rocky sections, especially around the castle areas. Given the elevation gain of nearly 500 meters, expect some sustained climbs.
Yes, the circuit features several interesting points. You'll pass by the historic Oedenburg, the impressive Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, an Old fountain, and the scenic Belvedere Langenberg, which likely offers great views.
Generally, hiking trails in this region are dog-friendly, but it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially around historical sites like castles and in areas where wildlife might be present. Be sure to carry water for your dog, as sources might be limited.
Spring and autumn are often ideal for hiking in this region, offering pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery. Spring brings blooming flora, while autumn showcases vibrant fall colors. Summer can be warm, so an early start is recommended. Winter hiking is possible but may require appropriate gear due to potential snow and ice, especially at higher elevations.
There is no general permit required to hike the Roche des Fées Circuit itself. However, if you plan to enter the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, there will be an entrance fee for the castle.
Specific parking details for this exact trailhead are not provided, but trails leading to popular attractions like the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg typically have designated parking areas nearby. Look for parking options in or around Saint-Hippolyte, which is a common starting point for loops in this area.
Yes, the Roche des Fées Circuit shares sections with several other trails. Notably, it covers parts of the Circuit de la Roche des Fées (68%), Dukes' trail (60%), and the Alsatian castles path (35%). You'll also find smaller segments overlapping with the GR 5 Vosges and Circuit d’Oedenbourg.
With a 'moderate' difficulty rating and nearly 500 meters of elevation gain over 11.3 kilometers, this trail is best suited for hikers with some experience or those who are reasonably fit. Beginners might find the sustained climbs challenging, but it's a rewarding hike for those prepared.
Given its proximity to the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, you can expect to find amenities such as restrooms and potentially cafes or snack options at or near the castle. For more extensive options, the nearby village of Saint-Hippolyte would be the best place to look.
For this moderate hike, essential gear includes sturdy hiking boots, sufficient water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. A map or GPS device is recommended, especially where the trail intersects with other paths. Sun protection and a first-aid kit are also advisable.
After the Traumatica (Europa Park) we made a "short" detour to Hohkönigsburg Castle! The hiking trail is ok, but for once this is more the goal, really the goal and not the way ;-) We can really recommend the castle to everyone, it currently costs 9 euros, but you can move around the castle almost freely if you want or use a guided tour.
We started from the parking lot in Saint-Hippolyte, our goal, the castle in the distance always in view. It is a very nice tour, which includes a few meters of altitude, but the paths meander very gently through the different landscapes, forests to the castle and back again. We made a small circular walk around the Hochkönigsburg and we discovered a small castle ruin in Oedenburg that I really didn't know yet. We really loved this tour, it's worth it! 🐾
I copied this tour from Komoot. We are in the ancient wine village of Saint Hippolyte, founded in the 8th Century by Fulrad, a Chancellor of Charlemagne. Quite soon we had left Weinfelder and went up 500 m. First we came through the Valley of the Mills, then we came to the Hermitage. The Roche des Fees, a Celtic mythical stone, lay on narrow paths that constantly led upwards. The Hochkönigsburg could only be seen at the last moment. A tour of the mighty castle lasted 1.5 hours. There was a lot to see and the view of the Vosges, the Rhine plain and the Scharzwald was fantastic. The descent is somewhat hidden next to a snack bar. I've been looking for a long time because before the Staircase stood a bunch of tourists. The descent was also via paths and a viewing platform. Until just before the finish again paths through vineyards.
Small tour from St. Hippolyte to the Haut Koenigsbourg. The castle was extensively restored by Kaiser Wilhelm II from 1901-1908, when Alsace was German again for a few decades. The French are happy about it and they hold the castle in high esteem 🤭😅 Absolutely worth seeing 🫡
