This route was planned by komoot.
The trailhead is located at the La Cumbrecita Look Out car park within the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. Due to limited parking, especially during peak hours, it's highly recommended to reserve a parking spot in advance. Public transport options to La Cumbrecita are also available.
Generally, there are no entrance fees to access Caldera de Taburiente National Park. However, due to the popularity of the La Cumbrecita area, you may need to reserve a parking spot, which acts as a form of access control during busy periods. Always check the official park website for the latest regulations.
This trail is considered to be of low to moderate difficulty, making it suitable for most fitness levels. The initial section from the car park is relatively flat and well-maintained. While some parts may become gradually steeper and require sure-footedness, it's generally an accessible route.
You'll be treated to magnificent and breathtaking views of the Caldera de Taburiente, a massive erosion crater. Key viewpoints include Lomo de las Chozas Lookout, offering exceptional perspectives into the crater's interior, and views of peaks like Roque de Los Muchachos. You can also enjoy vistas over the forested valley towards Cumbre Vieja.
Yes, the trail's low to moderate difficulty and well-maintained initial sections make it suitable for families. Interpretive panels along the way explain the area's geological history, which can be engaging for children. Good walking shoes are recommended for everyone.
Regulations regarding dogs in national parks can vary. It's best to check the official rules for Caldera de Taburiente National Park directly before planning your visit with a dog, as restrictions often apply to protect wildlife and natural habitats.
For the most stunning vistas, hiking during sunrise or sunset on a clear day is highly recommended. Generally, the Canary Islands enjoy a mild climate year-round, but checking local weather forecasts before your hike is always a good idea to ensure clear views and comfortable conditions.
The terrain starts notably flat and well-maintained from the La Cumbrecita car park. As you progress, the path may gradually become steeper, winding along slopes and sometimes passing through pine forests. While much of it is accessible, some sections may require sure-footedness. Good walking shoes are advisable.
The La Cumbrecita to Lomo de las Chozas Trail can be undertaken as an out-and-back route to the Lomo de las Chozas Lookout. While it can also be part of a longer circular walk, a southern section of a potential circular trail was temporarily closed for renovations as of July 2025. It's best to confirm current trail conditions before planning a circular route.
Yes, while hiking the La Cumbrecita to Lomo de las Chozas Trail, you will be on the route known as 'La Cumbrecita – Lomo de las Chozas'. It also intersects with sections of other official trails such as '[CIMA SC10] La Cumbrecita * Puerto de Tazacorte' and '[CIMA SC10] La Cumbrecita * Santa Cruz de la Palma'.
We recommend bringing good walking shoes, as some sections may be uneven. Water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and layers of clothing are also advisable, as weather conditions can change. Don't forget your camera for the incredible views!
Actually, you come to La Cumbrecita to visit this little circuit because of the two viewpoints "Mirador de las Chozas" and "Mirador de los Roques", which offer a great view of the Caldera de Taburiente. Unfortunately, we were unlucky because the clouds didn't want to clear from the caldera today. Nevertheless, we decided to do this circuit. And I can only recommend it to everyone who is already here. Because you don't get a view, but the path lined with pine trees turns into a mystical cloud forest, which has its own very special charm. It is important to know that there are only a few parking spaces here and there is usually no chance of getting up here without a prior reservation. We hadn't booked in advance, but we were lucky because some reservations were cancelled due to the weather.
Small round, but indescribable views ⛰. And the scent of the pine trees... really great 😊
Nice little round. Actually advertised as 1.5 hours...we were a bit faster. The view is just great. You should reserve a parking space in the visitor center in advance, as there are only 20 parking spaces up there and the entrance is monitored. The reservation is free of charge. There are other tours there (2.5 hours and 7 hours).
An absolute must on the island. Unfortunately it rained last night and the clouds are blocking the view 😁 In Cumbretia you have to reserve a parking space in advance, which we did last week. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great and many paths are closed due to landslides and are also being monitored ☺️👍🏻 then another attempt to walk El Pilar and again completely in clouds, let's see when the weather changes 😁 There was also a ranger there to check. Makes sense with the gases too 👍🏻 🙋♀️🙋🏼
https://www.reservasparquesnacionales.es/real/ParquesNac/index.aspx?ii=8DEU Make sure to reserve your parking space online in advance! You can also do this at any tourist information office
In the middle of the island is the huge caldera of Taburiente. It measures 9 km in diameter and is up to 2000 m deep, its 28 km long edge is dotted with a dozen peaks. The highest is the Roque de los Muchachos at 2426 m. The tour briefly described here runs between 1200 and 1300 meters in altitude, the valley basin is around 700 m and the highest point is at 2426 m. Unfortunately, the enormous dimensions are not really conveyed in the pictures, the solution is to see for yourself
Very nice tour, you should go in the morning because trade wind clouds gather over the mountains from midday. And with a car you have to register at the information desk, you get a two-hour time window there, there are limited parking spaces on the mountain, so register in advance
We are escaping the German winter and want to enjoy nature for almost three weeks on the Canary Islands (La Palma, La Gomera and Gran Canaria). Today we started our first short but impressive hike in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park at an altitude of almost 1300 meters. We were lucky and got a parking permit for the "La Cumbrecita" hiking car park in the national park's visitor center in the city of El Paso. From here we first hiked in the direction of the "La Cumbrecita" mountain in wonderful spring weather and then turned off a short time later to get to the first viewpoint, the "Mirador de los Roques". From here you could see the highest mountains on the island of La Palma in the north. Fantastic! The beautiful forest path continued to the next viewpoint, the "Mirador Lomo de las Chozas", where we also took a short break. After a good hour and a half we were back at the hiking car park.
