Sassolungo Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Here, at an altitude of 2,685 metres, you find yourself between the Sassolungo and the Cinque Dita tip. From the Sassolungo fork, you can enjoy a splendid view of the Sella group, the Marmolada and the Fassa Dolomites.

You can also find the Toni Demetz refuge. What makes the refuge truly unique is its history, which can be perceived in the numerous photos in the rooms, some of which date back to 1900. The refuge is managed by Heini Demetz, brother of Toni Demetz, and his family. There is a cable car that can take you here from Passo Sella. The terrain is very steep, but the views and atmosphere make the experience absolutely unforgettable.

Cool tour in wonderful weather and all without a mountain railway 👍

Probably a classic in the Dolomites - the Sassolungo tour. Even though the cable car looks very interesting and the ride should be an experience, I decided to walk to the gap. This definitely gives you more time to enjoy the views - especially if it snowed a bit the night before and the mountains are lightly powdered 🏔️ A beautiful tour with tremendous views of the rock massifs as you walk between Sassolungo and Sassopiatto. However, despite the low season, it was far too crowded for me. Especially on the climb it was like a crowd at times and you were often slowed down. Nevertheless, the climb was manageable in 45 minutes, instead of the stated 90 minutes from the valley station of the cable car.

I would do the same route again next time, it was ideal and although the ascent and descent were very steep, it was very easy to walk thanks to the steps.

A unique experience to go around the Langkofel so close with lots of rocks that we did without the cable car. You had to be free from vertigo and sturdy shoes and poles are recommended. It was very nice to dream again with a view of the mountains.

A day between rock and clouds: Circumnavigating the Sassolungo is no ordinary hike – it requires alpine experience, concentration, and respect for the terrain. Partially exposed sections, cool temperatures (only 7°C at the top), and at times poor visibility made the tour challenging, but also impressive. A brief moment to catch our breath was offered at the Toni Demetz Hut – nestled in the rock, between fog and silence. Perfect for a well-deserved break before continuing through the high alpine terrain. ⚠️ For experienced hikers only – a head for heights, surefootedness, and appropriate equipment are essential!

Easy but very beautiful via ferrata and suitable for first experiences. The Sassolungo tour is truly spectacular

A strenuous alpine tour with many meters of altitude and sensational views. Very good physical condition and absolute surefootedness required. In spring and late autumn it is essential to wear warm and weatherproof clothing. Don't forget the hat and scarf.
