This route leads from the Ermita Virgen de la Cabeza through the botanical garden "Jardín Botánico Umbría de la Virgen" up to the highest peaks of the Parque Natural Sierra de María y Los Vélez in the province of Almería. The starting point of the route is the Ermita Virgen de la Cabeza. From here it continues towards the botanical garden "Jardín Botánico Umbría de la Virgen". We were lucky that the botanical garden had just opened, so we could start towards the summit through the beautifully landscaped garden. The higher we got, the more impressive the view became. From up here you have a wonderful view of the town of María, the northwest side of the La Sagra mountain and the La Guillimona mountain. Below us is the Cerro Balsain, and to the east the Sierra del Gigante and the Sierra del Pericay. After crossing a fence, we zigzagged steeply uphill to the "Collado de Portalchico" pass (1,882 m). The view from up here is fantastic, we could see both the sea, in this case the "Mar de Albarán" and the snow-covered Sierra Nevada. From here we continued up a rocky, barren slope, past some smaller mountain peaks up to the "Alto de María" or also called "Cerro del Poyo", at a height of 2,045 m. From here we could enjoy an impressive 360° view of the surrounding peaks and mountain ranges, including: La Sagra, La Guillimona, El Gigante, El Pericay, San Blasco, Alto de los Cuernos, Peña Lastra etc. We then continued to the nearby Alto de La Burrica (2,025 m) with another stunning view. For On the way down we had to orient ourselves once again in the direction of Alto de María and then descended again in a zigzag, cross-country until we reached the fence we had crossed before and shortly afterwards came across the official hiking trail, which then led us back to the starting point.
