Hiking

On this hike from Herzogenrath to Alsdorf you embark on a journey through time, as you hike from the Middle Ages through the present to the future. From the train station you first go to the center of Herzogenrath, where Rode Castle and the remains of the city wall, witnesses from the Middle Ages await you. Then you dive into the green tunnel of the nature-protected Broichbachtal. Past the Herzogenrather Weiher you reach the stream with its beautiful alluvial forests and idyllic rest areas.

When you leave the Broichbach valley, the Noppenberg heap rises in front of you and then you cross the mining settlement of Zopp - both witnesses of the former mining age that shaped this region so strongly in the last century. The ascent to the heap is rewarded with a magnificent panorama. In the Energeticon industrial monument, where coal used to be stored and where you can now find the tourist information and a museum, you can take a look at the energy generation of the future. Walk past the Annapark to the Alsdorf-Annapark train station, where your tour ends.

Herzogenrath Pond

Highlight • Lake

The reservoir's purpose is to clean the Broichbach stream before it flows into the Wurm river. It consists of a small pond at its upper end, where coarse debris settles, and a larger reservoir where the remaining debris is deposited. Despite its dirty function, it blends in perfectly with the landscape.

Wild, natural, shady - hiking in the Broichbachtal is wonderful at any time of the year. The narrow path through the dense green is easy to walk on and leads through a kind of jungle in summer.

View from Berghalde Noppenberg

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Noppenberg spoil heap near Alsdorf is not a natural hill, but rather a result of coal mining. The deposited material comes from a great depth and forms a striking viewpoint in the Aachen coalfield. From the top, the view extends over the area surrounding Herzogenrath and Alsdorf and into the open landscape of the region.

The Energeticon is an energy experience museum. Definitely worth a visit. The riser tour in the mine is highly recommended. Gastronomically, the Eduard on the museum grounds is worth mentioning.
