This hike is considered difficult, requiring very good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy shoes. It involves significant elevation gain (around 1,000 meters) and can take over 6 hours to complete. Hikers should be prepared for rocky sections and an alpine environment.
The trail begins with an enchanting path alongside the Peguera River, offering shaded sections and the sound of rushing water. As you ascend, it transitions to a more exposed alpine environment with rocky sections and impressive views of the surrounding mountains and numerous lakes.
Key highlights include the beautiful Estany de Lladres, the stunning Estany Tort de Peguera, and the historic Josep Maria Blanc Refuge, which is situated right next to Estany Tort. You'll also enjoy panoramic views of Pyrenean peaks like Peguera and Monestero.
Yes, the route often follows sections of the GR-11. The Josep Maria Blanc Refuge is also strategically located at the southeastern end of the famous Carros de Foc traverse, which connects all the refuges within the national park.
The best time to hike is generally during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn, when snow has melted from higher altitudes. Be aware that depending on the time of year, you might still encounter snowfields, especially in spring.
National parks often have specific regulations regarding dogs to protect wildlife. While some areas might allow dogs on a leash, it's crucial to check the official park regulations for the Parque Nacional de Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici before bringing your dog on this trail.
Generally, there is no entrance fee to access the Parque Nacional de Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici. However, certain activities or specific areas might require permits. It's always best to check the official park website for the most up-to-date information on any required permits or regulations before your visit.
The trail starts from Espot. While you can park in Espot, the ascent to the Josep Maria Blanc Refuge cannot be done by private vehicle. During peak season, there are often shuttle services or taxis available from Espot that can take you to certain points within the park, reducing the initial hiking distance.
The Josep Maria Blanc Refuge, located at 2350 meters, offers 60 beds, WC, hot showers, blankets, and food and drink service when open. Wi-Fi is also available for a fee. When the main refuge is closed, a smaller emergency section with 4 beds, mattresses, blankets, a stove, and a first-aid kit is accessible.
Given the trail's difficulty and alpine environment, you should pack sturdy hiking boots, appropriate layers of clothing for varying weather conditions, rain gear, plenty of water, snacks, a map and compass or GPS device, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles can also be very helpful on rocky sections.
While the main route described here is typically an out-and-back or part of a longer traverse, the area around Estany Tort de Peguera and the Josep Maria Blanc Refuge offers opportunities for exploring. You can find various paths that loop around the lake or connect to other nearby lakes, allowing for shorter excursions from the refuge.
A beautiful walk from the center of Espot. You can also shorten it by just walking to Estany de Lladres (also beautiful) or to Rifugi J. M. Blanc. You can have lunch there. But once you're there, add an extra hour to take a walk around the lakes—it's the icing on the cake! Tip: Start this walk early. It's challenging, but with a reasonable level of fitness, easily manageable. We did the walk with two children, aged 13 and 15. Tip: Start your day with a nice coffee and sandwiches at the bakery in Espot near the parking lot.
