Cycling

Embark on a difficult touring bicycle loop from Hawes, covering 22.7 miles (36.5 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2370 feet (722 metres), typically completed in 2 hours and 35 minutes. This challenging route takes you over the famous Buttertubs Pass and Oxnop Scar, offering winding paved roads, classic stone walls, and expansive views across Wensleydale and Swaledale. You will encounter the distinctive 20-meter-deep limestone potholes near the summit of Buttertubs Pass, a unique geological feature that gives the pass its name. The high moorland setting provides memorable scenery throughout your ride.

This hard bike ride demands very good fitness, especially with initial gradients on Oxnop Scar reaching up to 25% and Buttertubs Pass hitting 15-20%. Be prepared for exposed sections on the upper slopes where strong winds are possible, and watch out for wandering sheep on the roads. For managing the steep climbs, consider using climbing gears such as a compact system with a small front chainring and a large rear sprocket. The descent into Muker from Buttertubs Pass includes sharp, steep hairpins, so careful control is essential.

Buttertubs Pass is renowned for its challenging nature and historical significance in professional cycling. It gained international fame as a categorized climb in Stage One of the 2014 Tour de France, where German cyclist Jens Voigt led over the summit. The pass was also scheduled for the 2019 UCI Road World Championships and is featured in "Simon Warren's 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs." Farmers historically used the cool limestone potholes near the summit to store butter, adding to the rich local lore of this iconic Yorkshire Dales route.

Wensleydale Creamery and Hawes Market

Highlight • Settlement

Here's where they make proper Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese, so you can go into the visitors centre and explore their 'cheese experience' if you're interested. Alternatively, go to the shop and cafe for a quick sit-down. The cafe is open daily from 9:00am to 3.30pm, and has beautiful views from its huge windows, as well as a great cheese-y menu.

Oxnop Scar Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

One of the lesser known climbs in the Yorkshire Dales, Oxnop Scar is a breathtaking stretch of singletrack road from the Swale Valley (Swaledale) up between the peaks of The Fleak to the east and Whitfield Fell to the west.

The steepest part comes first, with gradients measuring up to 25% on the first right hand hairpin bend! It's amazing how quickly you rise up the bank, offering incredible views back down over Swaledale as you glide along the smooth black asphalt up the more gentle moorland summit.

The total climb is 2.4 miles (3.8 km) long and peaks at 1,607 feet (490 m).

Bainbridge Village

Highlight • River

A chocolate-box village nestled amongst the Dales, Bainbridge is simply lovely. Surrounded by green farmland, the village has quiet streets lined with grey-stone cottages, tea shops and a pub. Close to the village, you will find Bainbridge Roman Fort as well as the shortest river in Britain – the River Bain.

In days gone by, an ancient horn would sound to guide foresters and travellers to the village through Wensleydale Forest. Although this tradition no longer exists, the horn can still be found in the Rose and Crown Pub and you will hear it played at 10pm from 27th September (Holy Rood) until Shrove Tuesday.
