The trail officially starts at the easily accessible Zannes/Zans Car Park in Val di Funes (Villnösstal). This is also where you'll find ample parking, making it convenient to begin your hike without needing a gondola.
Yes, the trail is generally considered easy to moderate in difficulty, making it an excellent choice for hikers with less experience. It's also manageable for families, particularly those with children over six years old.
The trail offers a dramatic and varied experience, winding through a mix of stone pine and spruce forests and expansive alpine meadows. While much of it traverses woodland, frequent openings provide breathtaking, close-up views of the majestic Geisler/Odle peaks, which rise like 'daggers slashing the sky'. You'll encounter tranquil forest paths, vibrant wildflower meadows, and some rocky or root-filled sections, especially on descents. There are also wider gravel sections.
The standard loop typically takes between 3 to 4 hours to complete, not including stops for photos, refreshments, or enjoying the views at the alpine huts.
Absolutely! The trail is dotted with charming alpine huts where you can rest and enjoy local cuisine. Notable ones include Gschnagenhardt Alpine Hut (Malga Casnago) and Geisler Alm, which is famous for its panoramic 'Cinema delle Odle' terrace offering spectacular mountain views.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it's located within the Puez-Odle Nature Park, dogs must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers.
The trail is popular from late spring to early autumn. For a quieter experience and to avoid the peak summer crowds, visiting during the shoulder seasons (May, early June, or late September, early October) is often suggested. The views are stunning in any season, but wildflowers are abundant in spring/early summer, and autumn brings vibrant colors.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Adolf Munkel Trail or to access the Puez-Odle Nature Park itself. However, parking at the Zannes/Zans Car Park may incur a fee.
Many hikers recommend walking the loop counter-clockwise. This approach allows you to experience the most dramatic mountain views with optimal lighting and often helps in tackling the steepest sections earlier in your hike.
Beyond the stunning View of the Geisler (Odle) Group, you'll pass by the Start of the Adolf Munkel Trail, and have opportunities to stop at charming alpine huts like Gschnagenhardt Alpine Hut (Malga Casnago) and Zannes Hut. The trail itself is a highlight, offering diverse landscapes and unique perspectives of the famous Seceda ridgeline.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Adolf Munkel Weg - Via delle Odle, Naturerlebnispfad Zans, and Adolf-Munkel-Weg, offering connections to other trails within the area.
Today we hiked a truly amazing loop of the Geisler Group from Zannes. The tour gets 11 out of 10 stars 🤭. It's worth the €10 parking fee. SIMPLY DREAMY 🤩🤗🤗
Parking fee has been increased to €8. Pay attention to the opening times of the huts
Wonderful and very varied tour that is really worth it. Unfortunately, the Garmin watch did not track 6 km correctly, because the hike is a good 15 km long, has 570 meters of altitude and takes about 4 hours. You should start early enough in the morning, otherwise it will get very crowded. Parking is € 8.
The Adolf-Munkel-Weg below the imposing north face of the Geisler is one of the most beautiful trails in the Dolomites. There is a breathtaking mountain backdrop to see. Beautiful alpine pastures also invite you to stop for a break.
All in all a nice round. Fits, are ko. Dry. In between always with sun; a certain alternation between cool and warm. The Geisleralm very nicely located. Recommendation!! ... on the way back we met a Haflinger family, with foals, running free ... !!
After yesterday's long route, we headed into the Vilnösstal Valley today and hiked the Adolf Munkel Trail. I was surprised by the length of the route. The download showed me about 14 km, but in reality it was only about 9.5 km. Regardless, it was a fantastic tour through rustic forests and beautiful meadows to relax in, and the mighty Geisler massif loomed overhead. Unfortunately, this short tour was completely overcrowded, which is understandable given the nature of the hike. We were happy to find a parking space for 10 euros.
The Adolf Munkel Trail is a busy but beautiful trail below the Geisler peaks. It begins at the Zanseralm car park (€10 parking fee) and leads almost exclusively along rooty larch forest paths. The highlight is the alpine meadows at the foot of the Geisler peaks and at the Geisleralm. Here, there are many panoramic loungers, wooden rocking chairs, and other amenities on the slope with direct views of the peaks. An absolutely breathtaking view! You can eat well at the Geisleralm. Tip: If you prefer something a little less crowded, you can stop at the Dusleralm, just a few hundred meters below the Geisleralm, for significantly more reasonable prices and with a similarly beautiful view (take the trail that branches off to the right from the wide path after the Geisleralm). Overall, we liked it better than the very busy and busy Geisleralm because it is smaller and quieter. The only downside here was the pop music 🥴, but if you like it... Overall, it's another very beautiful trail, but unfortunately it's also very busy, especially in good weather, even in the off-season.
Challenging tour at the foot of the Geisler mountain peaks. Along the Adolf Munkel path past 3 alpine pastures. Admittedly very nicely laid out, unfortunately completely overcrowded with people. You have to queue at the entrance to the beer garden. It's better to take your own food with you. A shame. You have to pay 8 euros for the day for the parking lot. Fair or not, remains to be seen. The Seiser Alm would be a lot more expensive, however, as a parking lot there costs 28 euros and you can only drive there until 9 a.m. 😞. But my conclusion: thumbs up for the Zansser Alm. The climb is compensated by an impressive panorama of part of the Dolomites.
