A visit to Bruges is always recommended. On this tour, you'll also learn to appreciate the surroundings of the canal beauty - from beautiful canal paths to a quirky café. Unsurprisingly, there are no mountainous passages awaiting you on this tour; it remains completely flat. As long as the wind doesn't slow you down, you'll have a relaxing ride ahead of you.

It starts in the center of Cadzand-Bad. You drive a bit along the sea. But today the focus will not be on the sea, but rather on another body of water later on in the tour. First you cycle along fields to an enchanted place. A mighty, angular tower rises at the entrance to Sint Anna ter Muiden. It clearly towers over the picturesque houses that line the market square. Sint Anna ter Muiden has had city rights since 1242 and is now a very small town, but worth seeing. Shortly after you leave this, you collect your first Belgian driving kilometers of the day.

Now the fields dominate the panorama. You cycle comfortably through the green scenery until another pretty place catches your attention: Oostkerke with its whitewashed houses. Now you cross two parallel canals. Soon you will also have the pleasure of driving directly along a canal. Before that, you might want to visit a café. 't Vogelkotje is a delight for the eyes and the taste buds alike. The freshly baked cake is served in a lovingly decorated room - with an impressive aviary collection. In summer you sit outside under a parasol with a view of the meadows.

Refreshed, you cycle towards Damme, where a certain Tijl Uilenspiegel is said to have been born. Don't let that distract you and follow the channel from now on. This will take you to Bruges. There, another channel immediately takes over the task of accompanying you to the center. Your eye already falls on the houses lined up next to each other with their typical stepped gables. So that you can look around Bruges in a relaxed manner, the tour takes you to the underground bicycle parking lot. This is located near the large market square and is free.

After extensively exploring the UNESCO World Heritage city, you get back on the saddle and leave Bruges the way you arrived - along the canals. In the direction of Damme, this time you choose the right bank for a new perspective. In Damme you then change to the left side. Now you can switch off, because unlike on the way there, you continue along the canal. The trees along the way provide you with shade and create interesting reflections on the water surface. But every canal path, no matter how beautiful, has an end. And this ends in Sluis. By the way, you've been back in the Netherlands for almost a kilometer now. A water fountain greets you in the old harbor of Sluis. If you still have the energy for a short city trip, you can marvel at the Belfry, for example. This is the only one of its kind in the Netherlands. On the final kilometers back you can look forward to being accompanied by the canal again until everything revolves around the sea again in Cadzand-Bad.

If you are not in the region and would like to travel by train for this tour, you can change the route slightly and start in Bruges instead of Cadzand-Bad. Bruges Central Station, for example, is well connected to Brussels. With the nice Café ‘t vogelkotje and the almost endless places to stop for refreshments in Bruges, you are well looked after on this tour.

Reformed Church and Tower Sint Anna ter Muiden

Highlight • Religious Site

The heavy square tower stump still towers above the houses of Sint Anna ter Muiden. It is a remnant of a 14th century Gothic cruciform church. From the traces in the four side walls one can deduce that the tower was built between the choir, the nave of the church and two transepts. The old tower can be climbed via a spiral staircase. The height shows how impressive the building must have been in the past.

The café is really exceptional. We had a lovely break here. The cake was extremely expensive though (the original Sacher in Vienna is cheaper!)

An important channel in Bruges' maritime history.

Nice to look at today, take a leisurely ride along, or just sit on the bank and spend the moment in the sun.

Damse Vaart Canal

Highlight (Segment) • River

A scenic, tree-lined, canal-side, flat, shared use path runs along the Damme Canal and links the village of Damme with the Leopold and Schipdonk Canals to the east. Keep going if you want to reach the Netherlands.

Old Harbour of Sluis

Highlight • River

In the 14th century, ships from the French and English fleets met at the gates of Sluis. The fight went down in history as the Battle of Sluis. Fortunately, things are much quieter in the old harbor of Sluis today. A few pedal boats and ducks glide across the water while you relax on a bench on the shore.

Super beautiful... Bruges is really beautiful... but you need a lot of time to see everything... The nice thing is that you can also ride your bike some of the way... (if it's not too crowded)

Great tour, beautiful landscape, beautiful Bruges...unique

This is not the complete Verdwenen Zwinhavens route. Very nice route through the polders, highly recommended! The Verdwenen Zwinhaven route starts in Bruges and meanders along the Damse Vaart to Sluis, on to Retranchement. You cycle to t Zwin via the international dike. You return via Knokke, Sint-Anna ter Muiden to Oostkerke. Along Noorweegse kaai back towards Bruges.

After @Christine Atelier im Knauer Garten and our host recommended the route, we also did the tour of the disappeared Zwin ports by bike today. But only after we had been to Westvleteren to try the 12, which has been named the world's best beer several times. It also only has a measly 10.2% alcohol 🥴 the bike tour is mostly on well-paved bike paths or back roads and is very well signposted. We even cross briefly to the Dutch side. We even made a quick detour to the beach to walk barefoot on the sand 😊 the North Sea is still quite fresh 🥶 on the way back we had a bit of a headwind, which unfortunately isn't measured in altitude 😅 the food was delicious too 😋 definitely a lovely bike ride here in flat Flanders.

Now the time has come and our last tour of this holiday. From our campsite in Cadzand-Bad we went to Bruges. It is a little trip down memory lane from last year when we were there too. So we refreshed ourselves. After a bit of sightseeing, we did the beer tasting. In the Artisanale Chocolaterie we tried the excellent Belgian truffle chocolates and bought a few. To finish off, we had a beer in the De Halve Maan brewery. Bruges is a very impressive city with great historical sights. We went back via the Damse Vaart Kanaal to Sluis and then on to the campsite.

It might not be the best decision to visit Bruges on a Saturday 😉😉, beautiful weather and the town is packed! But a bike ride there is a very good idea and the waffles are sooo delicious. Wonderfully well-maintained bike paths, even in our Belgian neighbors, and you can cycle along the canal in a relaxed manner and enjoy it. A detour to Damme with its medieval buildings is worthwhile, it's on the route. Yeeeees and Sluis, there's always something going on there! Pretty streets, lots of outdoor dining and numerous shops offer something for every taste. I finally got my beloved Kibbelinge here! 😋 It's also worth walking around the town along the old defensive wall.

The day started with a nice cobblestone route in Damme, and then we continued along a dirt path and kept going along the canal on a perfect path. Arriving at the intersection with Sifon and the Leopold Canal at km. 13, a triathlon had started. We admired these athletes of all categories for a while. Then, a magnificent ride to Sluis and the canal tour around the town. On the way back, at km. 30, we were interrupted by marshals who made us take a 14km detour through uninteresting roads. Apart from this small inconvenience, it was a good day, spent in magnificent places.
