Frequently Asked Questions

What is the terrain like on the Plage des phoques loop?

The trail features easily accessible paths, primarily traversing a vast, sandy beach that can stretch for up to 12 kilometers at low tide. You'll also walk through protected dunes and natural spaces, offering diverse coastal scenery.

What wildlife can I expect to see along the route?

The most notable wildlife you'll encounter are wild grey seals and harbor seals. These colonies rest on the sandbanks of the Authie Bay, especially at low tide. You might also spot various bird species in the protected dune areas.

When is the best time to observe seals on this trail?

The best time to see the seals is approximately 2.5 hours before low tide, when the sandbanks are exposed. Observations can typically be made from a distance of 50 to 80 meters, particularly near the nautical club at the junction of the Authie and the English Channel.

What are the main points of interest along the Plage des phoques loop?

Beyond the seal colonies, highlights include the Cross of Professor Jean Debeyre, the expansive Seal Beach (Plage des Phoques), Berck-sur-Mer, and the scenic Baie d'Authie Coastal Area. You'll also pass by Berck-sur-Mer Beach and admire the iconic seaside architecture of Berck-sur-Mer.

Does the trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route incorporates sections of several official trails, including the Sentier du Littoral, Tour de Groffliers, and La Baie d'Authie. It also briefly follows parts of the EV4 France and Promenade du Professeur Jean Debeyre.

Where can I park to access the Plage des phoques loop?

While specific parking lots aren't detailed, the loop starts and ends in Berck, suggesting parking would be available within Berck-sur-Mer, likely near the beach or town center. It's advisable to check local signage upon arrival.

Is the Plage des phoques loop dog-friendly?

Information on dog restrictions for this specific loop is not provided. However, given the presence of protected wildlife like seals and dunes, it's highly recommended to keep dogs on a leash and adhere to any local regulations regarding pets on beaches and in natural areas. Always clean up after your dog.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and autumn often offer pleasant temperatures for hiking and good opportunities for seal observation. Summer can be busy, and winter might be cold and windy, though still accessible.

Are there any permits or fees required to hike the Plage des phoques loop, or regulations for Baie d'Authie?

There are no specific permits or entrance fees mentioned for hiking this loop. However, as the trail passes through the Baie d'Authie Coastal Area, which is a natural and protected environment, it's crucial to respect local regulations. This includes staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife (especially seals), and keeping the area clean. For detailed local information, you can consult berck-tourisme.com.

Is the Plage des phoques loop suitable for families?

While the paths are generally accessible, the loop is a moderate hike covering nearly 17 kilometers. This distance and duration (around 4 hours 17 minutes) might be challenging for very young children or those unaccustomed to longer walks. Families with older children or those with good fitness levels may find it enjoyable, especially for the seal-watching opportunities.

What should I bring for a hike on this trail?

Given the length and coastal environment, it's recommended to bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and appropriate footwear for sandy and potentially wet conditions. Binoculars would be excellent for observing the seals from a distance.

This is a very nice walk through the dunes and along the beach and really worth it. Be careful, sometimes the sand is very deep.

Very nice hike! but high tide for me so I didn't see any Seals!!! A beautiful immersion in the Bay of the Somme No difficulty Be careful, the end of the trail is closed due to a landslide (see photo), you have to come back for the road See the other hikes: https://www.komoot.com/fr-fr/collection/3209481/-road-trip-en-baie-de-sommes

This section of the coast is characterized by dunes, a lot of sand, debris from bunkers and the remains of long-decayed piers. Incidentally, seals can be observed on the sandbanks at low tide. Conclusion: Highly recommended.

September 18, 2022, Berck - Baie d'Authie

The trail starts near the Berck seal hotspot. It runs along the Baie de Authie, a very beautiful and spacious bay south of Berck. For the first section, we chose the path above the coastal fortifications and below the dunes. It is very easy to walk here because the sand is relatively firm. But later we are also on and through the water along the coast. Great scenery and we were lucky that we were mostly completely alone. Later it went through the floodplain and through the dunes. The last third of the way wasn't that nice anymore, mostly on gravel roads, along a duck hunting ground and a horse racing track. All in all, absolutely worth it.
