This route was planned by komoot.
This loop is considered difficult and requires a good level of fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes. It involves a significant elevation gain of over 1,100 meters with steep ascents, particularly through the wooded sections. Alpine experience is highly recommended.
The loop typically starts from Mezzolago Village. You should be able to find parking in or near the village, but it's always a good idea to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot.
The trail is rich in history and stunning views. You'll encounter the World War I Viewpoint and Trenches Overlooking Lake Ledro, offering a firsthand look at military walkways, trenches, and tunnels from 1915-1918. The summit of Cima d'Oro provides expansive vistas, though many hikers find the iron cross of the Monte Oro Observatory to offer the most beautiful panoramic outlooks over Lake Ledro, Lake Garda, and the Plain of Arco.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the region, given the difficult nature of this particular loop with steep and potentially rocky sections, it might be challenging for some dogs. If you bring your dog, ensure they are fit for a strenuous hike and keep them on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or other hikers.
The best time to hike this trail is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October), when the weather is more stable and the paths are clear of snow. Always check local weather forecasts before heading out, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
No specific permits or entrance fees are generally required for hiking this trail within the Alpi Ledrensi e Judicaria UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. However, visitors are expected to respect the natural environment and any local regulations regarding waste, noise, and protected areas. Always check with local tourist offices for any current advisories or changes.
The terrain is quite varied and challenging. You'll traverse mountain hiking paths, natural dirt trails, and sections with asphalt, gravel, and unpaved surfaces. Expect steep, rocky ascents and descents, particularly through wooded areas and along the historical Sentiero Austroungarico.
Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. Notably, a significant portion of it follows the historic Sentiero Austroungarico 1915-1918. You'll also cross sections of the Locca - Mezzolago, Sentér de Dromaé, and Sentiero botanico Val Dromaé, among others.
Many experienced hikers recommend undertaking this loop counter-clockwise. The ascent through the woods can be very steep, and descending these sections might be particularly hard on the knees. Going counter-clockwise allows you to tackle the steepest parts on the way up.
Given its distance of approximately 12.3 kilometers and over 1,100 meters of elevation gain, this difficult hike typically takes around 6 to 7 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the viewpoints and historical sites.
Mezzolago is accessible by public transport, though options might be limited depending on the season. It's advisable to check local bus schedules from larger towns in the Trentino region, such as Riva del Garda or Trento, to plan your journey to the trailhead.
Today cycling shoes were exchanged for hiking bunkers again. It should go from Mezzolago on Lake Ledro up to the Cima d'Oro. Weather report was so-so, possibly with rain and thunderstorms ... and you really don't want to be out in the mountains with Spatzi during thunderstorms. Oh, then there's a treat for the ears🤕. But it looked rather good, so off we went. Right at the beginning, up a somewhat steeper road, I noticed ... it was going to be difficult, legs like yesterday's bottle empty. And it should always be nice and steep for the next 2 1/2 hours, without a lot of sweeping uphill. Then the first glimpses of Lake Ledro. And the first remnants of former combat positions from the war. Then finally over the tree line with great views. Unfortunately also the first thick rain clouds and rumblings. Spatzi was getting nervous. Still a short rest in the sun below the Cima d'Oro ... very, very nice there. The rumbling in the distance grew louder, the first light rain ... the snow was too poor for a quick descent into the valley and the hiking bunk was not waxed. That means step up a gear and off we went .... a somewhat shortened tour with great views in the summit area
Attention: The time is not correct. We had about 5h10 with a break (about 4h15 without breaks).
Ledro is always beautiful....like the route... The climb towards Cima Oro is immediately steep and then takes the Austroung path... Very steep but all in the woods and in nature.... the last stretch is very beautiful with spectacular views of Lake Ledro and crossing trenches and caves dug in WW1.... the view from the cross is truly breathtaking... The descent is initially on a ridge path but then becomes more monotonous and mostly on loose and stony forest roads... real knee-breakers.... Given the absence of refuges along the route, we fall back with a beer on Riva del Garda🤷🍻🍻🍻
Even if not very high, a wonderful peak with a view of three lakes: Garda, Ledro and a small piece of Tenno. View of the Ledrensi, Brenta, Stivo peaks, the Baldo chain and even the Sirmione peninsula when climbing, which for an optical effect seems suspended between the clouds. If you are trained to climb 1000 meters of altitude difference, do not miss this peak, it is worth it. The route does not have exposed sections, it takes place on a path in the woods with continuous interception of the forest road that goes up in an "S". Presence of 10 meters of cord to overcome some rocks, bypassable from the forest road. Towards the observatory almost at the top, the path winds through the Austro-Hungarian trenches with significant steepness. Return on the forest road after Malga Dromaè on path 453. 📌Cima Oro, 1802 mt🇮🇹 Breathtaking view of Lake Ledro 💦 🅿️Mezzolago (TN) 🧗🏼♀️15.30 km; 1212 D+ From the church of Mezzolago, go up along the road, at the end of the village you enter the woods following path 453. Once you reach the barns of Dromaé, follow the Austrungarico 1915-1918 path (path 413), a path immersed in the trenches of the 1st World War, with a continuous view of the lake. At the end of the path in about a hundred meters you reach the observatory that offers a beautiful view of Lake Ledro. Behind the anti-summit, continue along the path on the ridge up to Cima Oro. We return passing through the Bocca di Dromaè to then rejoin the barns and following the road to Fior di Bella we return to Mezzolago
The one with the most beautiful panoramic mountain on Lake Garda, interesting is also the complex from the 1st World War, which was successfully held against the Italians. The way back was deliberately chosen partly on the MTB route to protect knees and feet😉
Actually a nice hike in the mountains of Lake Ledro. The descent back to the starting point is steep. Important good hiking boots and strength when descending.
