This route was planned by komoot.
The Komoot tour data suggests an average duration of approximately 2 hours and 58 minutes to complete this 9.3 km loop trail. However, your actual time may vary depending on your pace, fitness level, and how often you stop to enjoy the views or explore points of interest.
The trail offers a diverse terrain. You'll encounter gravel sections and forested paths winding through hornbeam, acacia, and downy oak trees. As you ascend, the vegetation shifts to chestnut groves and Mediterranean scrub. Be prepared for some stony parts and a notable steep cypress staircase with ancient, worn steps. While there's a 5 km section without significant slopes, other parts are constantly uphill and can be challenging, especially if stones are damp and slippery.
You'll find several notable features. Early on, you'll get picturesque views of the plains and Monselice. Key scenic points include the Terrazza di Ercole, which offers panoramic vistas and features the Statue of Hercules. Further along, you can visit the tranquil Eremo di Santa Domenica and enjoy views of a quarry and the prominent Rocca di Monselice. Don't miss the Dosso Solone summit for more views.
While some sections are relatively flat, the trail is generally described as having 'sometimes challenging slopes' and a 'steep cypress staircase'. Komoot classifies it as 'moderate' difficulty. Beginners with a reasonable level of fitness should be able to complete it, but be prepared for varied surfaces and elevation changes. It's a good idea to wear appropriate hiking footwear.
The Euganean Hills, where this trail is located, are beautiful year-round. Spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant hiking conditions with mild temperatures and vibrant foliage. Summer can be hot, so an early morning start is advisable. Winter hikes are possible, but some sections might be damp and slippery, especially on stony paths.
While specific parking details aren't provided, the trail is located near Monselice, which is a common starting point for hikes in the Euganean Hills. Look for designated parking areas in or around Monselice that provide access to the Monte Ricco area. It's always a good idea to check local signage upon arrival for the most current parking information.
The Euganean Hills Regional Park generally welcomes dogs, but they must be kept on a leash at all times to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Please remember to clean up after your pet to maintain the natural beauty of the area.
No, you do not need a special permit or to pay an entrance fee to hike Monte Ricco and Monte Castello Trail No. 6. It is located within the Parco Regionale dei Colli Euganei, which is freely accessible to the public. However, always respect park regulations and leave no trace.
Yes, this route shares sections with several other trails. You'll find it intersects with parts of the Sentiero 6 del Monte Ricco e del Monte Castello, the Raccordo, and various segments of Il Cammino di Sant'Antonio (Tappa 2.2, Opzione Tappa 2, and Tappa 2). It also briefly crosses the E2 - Anello dei Colli Euganei and several sections of Via Cava delle more.
The research suggests a potential detour towards Monte Castello might lead to a refreshment point. However, it's always best to carry sufficient water and snacks, as dedicated facilities directly on the trail itself may be limited. Monselice, the nearby town, offers various cafes and amenities before or after your hike.
Given the varied terrain, including stony and potentially slippery sections, sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are highly recommended. Dress in layers suitable for the weather, as conditions can change. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a basic first-aid kit. A map or GPS device (like the Komoot app) is also useful for navigation.
Today complete tour of Mount Ricco in Monselice with a detour to Mount Castello
Departure from Monselice, just above the train station and climb to Mount Ricco which has the Hermitage of Santa Domenica on its summit, a hermitage unfortunately almost engulfed by the large construction of the 50s of the last century. Despite the low altitude (max 325m) the view of the plain and the surrounding conical hills is always wonderful, especially from the Terrazza d'Ercole, halfway up the mountain. I recommend not simply going up and down to the summit, but taking the ring marked with the signpost 6 which circles Mount Ricco halfway up. Also worth doing is the long staircase up to the Hermitage, rather than using the asphalt.
