This route was planned by komoot.
This loop is classified as difficult. It features sustained and marked inclines with a significant elevation gain. Hikers should have very good fitness, be sure-footed, wear sturdy shoes, and possess some alpine experience.
The terrain is varied and demanding. You'll encounter steep ascents through fir forests, zigzagging paths, and rocky sections, especially closer to the lakes. While mostly accessible, sure-footedness is consistently required throughout the route.
The route offers stunning alpine scenery and several key highlights. You'll pass by the Passo di Mezzeno, the picturesque Twin Lakes (Laghi Gemelli), and the impressive Laghi Gemelli Dam. The Laghi Gemelli Mountain Hut is also a significant landmark, offering a place to rest and refuel.
While the trail itself is generally accessible for dogs, it's a challenging route requiring good fitness from both you and your dog. Given the rocky sections and potential for other hikers, it's advisable to keep dogs on a leash. Always ensure your dog is accustomed to long, strenuous hikes in alpine environments.
The best time to hike this loop is typically from late spring to early autumn (June to September). During these months, the weather is generally more stable, and the trails are free of snow. Winter hiking is possible but requires proper snow equipment like grappling hooks for boots, as parts of the loop might not be beaten.
This trail is located within the Parco delle Orobie Bergamasche. Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking on established trails within the park. However, always check local regulations before your visit, especially regarding camping or specific activities.
While specific parking details for 'Cagnoli' as a starting point for this exact loop are not extensively detailed, hikers typically find parking in the general area or nearby villages like Carona or Branzi, which serve as common access points for trails leading to Laghi Gemelli. It's recommended to arrive early, especially on weekends, as parking can be limited.
Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. Notably, it covers significant sections of the Sentiero delle Orobie Orientali - Tappa 2 and also includes parts of the Giro dei cinque laghi, the Sentiero Partigiano Ercole Pedretti, and the Sentiero della Cultura Casearia.
The Laghi Gemelli Mountain Hut (Rifugio Laghi Gemelli) is a welcoming mountain refuge located directly on the banks of the lake. It offers a bar, restaurant serving traditional local cuisine, and overnight accommodation, making it an ideal spot for a break or an overnight stay.
Given the trail's difficult rating and alpine environment, you should pack sturdy hiking boots, appropriate layers of clothing (even in summer, weather can change quickly), rain gear, plenty of water, snacks, a map or GPS device, sunscreen, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles are also highly recommended for stability on varied terrain.
Yes, while this specific loop starts from Cagnoli, the Laghi Gemelli area is accessible from various points. Routes from Carona (like CAI 211) or Baite di Mezzeno (CAI 215) are common. These offer different lengths and difficulty levels, allowing you to choose a route that best suits your preferences and fitness level.
Very pleasant tour, right from the start at the Mezzeno huts where we made friends with the locals; we left late (7pm) and during the outward journey some physical problems of the guys slowed us down a bit, but we solved them and the arrival at the Gemelli lakes refuge was very satisfying and pleasant. After a beer we set off again with headbands and everything necessary, a very pleasant return despite the darkness (in particular the passage from the Mezzeno pass which was sensational with the starry sky above). Recommended 8/10
The hike from the parking lot to the Laghi Gemelli refuge, including the return trip from the other side of the lake, is very doable if you're fit, although the most challenging part is the initial climb. I then ventured to the nearby peaks, following the suggestion of a route I found online, but I must say it was quite challenging as the route wasn't always marked and visible (without Komoot with the GPX track, I would have easily gotten lost).
A friend told me that 5 minutes from the refuge there was the Laghetto della Paura... maybe next time I'll look for it better🤣🤣🤣
