This route was planned by komoot.
This stage is considered a hard route due to a significant and demanding ascent, particularly towards the latter part of the hike. While komoot classifies the tour as 'easy' based on its algorithm, the detailed trail research indicates a substantial climb of around 550 meters over 11-13 kilometers, making it a challenging experience for many hikers.
The trail begins within the natural and verdant environment of the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park, winding through picturesque woods. As you ascend towards the Sanctuary and the hamlet of Santa Maria del Monte, the path becomes more challenging. The journey culminates at the Sacro Monte of Varese, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering both natural beauty and profound cultural landmarks.
This stage is rich in historical and religious significance. Key highlights include the Pilgrimage Route to the Sacro Monte of Varese itself, and the destination, the Sacro Monte of Varese and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll also encounter the statue of Moses at Santa Maria del Monte.
The duration can vary, but estimates suggest it takes approximately 3 hours to complete the 11-13 kilometer route. This does not include time for stops at the various points of interest along the way.
The Via Francisca del Lucomagno route, including this stage, is generally accessible throughout the year. However, the most favorable hiking conditions are typically found from March/April to October/November, when the weather is milder and more predictable.
This stage of the Via Francisca del Lucomagno typically starts near Badia di Ganna and leads to the Sacro Monte of Varese, specifically the hamlet of Santa Maria del Monte.
Parking is generally available near the starting points of trails leading to Sacro Monte Varese, as well as at the destination itself. Specific parking areas can be found in Badia di Ganna for the start, and at Santa Maria del Monte for the end of the stage.
While the trail passes through natural areas like the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in protected areas and near religious sites. Check local regulations for specific rules regarding pets within the park and at the Sacro Monte.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Via Francisca del Lucomagno: Stage 2 or to access the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park. However, it's always a good idea to check for any updated local regulations or specific requirements before your visit.
Yes, this stage of the Via Francisca del Lucomagno intersects with several other trails. The route fully covers the 'Via Francisca del Lucomagno: Tappa 2' and significantly overlaps with 'Via Verde Varesina tappa 2'. You'll also find shorter sections that coincide with trails like 'Via del Paretto', 'Via Beata Giuliana', and 'Via Cardinale Federico'.
Today we climbed the holy mountain of Varese to the church of Santa Maria del Monte. The rocky path takes you past 17 chapels from the 16th century, each chapel having its own style. We were very lucky with the weather. When we got back down, it started to rain. By the way, this hike with the chapels is part of the UNESCO World Heritage and is definitely worth a visit
