Hiking

Embark on an easy 2.1-mile (3.3 km) hike through Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, a route that typically takes around 1 hour and 4 minutes to complete. You will gain 488 feet (149 metres) in elevation as you wander through towering redwood groves, where the canopy filters sunlight, creating a peaceful atmosphere. A highlight is the 60-foot Pfeiffer Falls, which cascades down moss-covered cliffs. The trail then leads you to the Valley View Overlook, offering panoramic views of the Big Sur River Valley and the rugged coastline.

When planning your visit, be aware that the trail features varied terrain, including dirt paths, boardwalks, and numerous stairs, especially on the Pfeiffer Falls section. While generally manageable, some parts can be steep but short. The trail was reopened in 2021 and again in September 2025 after storm damage, so check for current conditions before you go. This popular route offers a rewarding experience for most hikers.

This trail provides a diverse journey through changing landscapes. You will start in redwood groves, then transition to oak woodlands as you climb. From the Valley View Overlook, you can enjoy expansive views that include the Santa Lucia Mountains. A notable feature is the dramatic footbridge, which was part of the trail's reconstruction after storm damage.
