Hiking

Prepare for a difficult hike through the Monti Sibillini National Park, covering 11.0 miles (17.6 km) with a significant 4327 feet (1319 metres) of elevation gain, taking around 7 hours and 55 minutes. This loop trail leads you through a narrow glacial valley, offering dramatic views of peaks like Monte Vettore. You will encounter varied terrain, from alpine paths to unstable scree and exposed sections, demanding robust footwear and careful footing. The iconic Lake Pilato, often called "the lake with glasses" due to its shape, is a highlight, nestled beneath vertical rock walls and displaying captivating shades of purple, blue, and green.

This route is considered hard and requires a good level of physical fitness, sure-footedness, and prior alpine hiking experience. Specialized equipment and technical mountain clothing are recommended due to the challenging nature of certain segments. Be aware that a particular descent from Roccette, below Rifugio Zilioli, is strongly discouraged even for experienced individuals due to its exposed nature and high risk of falling.

Lake Pilato is a unique glacial lake, the only natural one in the Marche region, and home to the endemic *Chirocefalo del Marchesoni*, a small, red, belly-swimming crustacean found nowhere else. The Monti Sibillini are steeped in folklore, with Lake Pilato central to legends involving witches and even Pontius Pilate. The trail offers an authentic high-mountain experience within a protected area renowned for its wild beauty and diverse wildlife, including the Apennine wolf and golden eagle.

Pilate Lake

Highlight • Lake

It is a body of water of glacial origin of the Alpine type, one of the few in the Apennines, enclosed in a narrow glacial valley north of the main peak of the massif, surrounded by the highest peaks of the Sibillini Mountains (Monte Vettore 2476 m, Cima del Redentore 2449 m, Cima del Lago 2422 m and Pizzo del Diavolo 2,410 m). The only natural lake in the Marche, it was formed due to the damming created by the remains of a glacial moraine. The latest modeling of the glacial valley is from the Upper Pleistocene (125,000 to 10,000 years ago). Its location between impervious and vertical walls immediately below the top of Monte Vettore is particular and suggestive.
The lake is home to a particular endemism, the Marchesoni Chirocephalus: it is a small red crustacean measuring 9-12 millimeters and swims with its belly facing upwards. The area also has a very small insect called dytiscis, a black aquatic beetle of Boreal-Alpine origin.

Redentore Peak

Highlight • Summit

The Cima del Redentore is a mountain in the Sibillini Mountains, on the border between Umbria and Marche, and is the highest peak in the Umbrian region with 2,448 meters above sea level. It is part of the Monte Vettore group and is located right above Lake Pilato.

Lake Peak

Highlight • Summit

The top of the lake, 2,422 meters above sea level, remains hidden from the path. Coming from the Zilioli bivouac, the path to the summit is more obvious. The view is truly very beautiful: on one side the Castelluccio Plain, on the other Lake Pilato and the Adriatic Sea in the background.

Certainly not for everyone. You are always under the sun. Nice difference in altitude. You have to bring water as there are no fountains on the trail. Be very careful when going down to the famous "Roccette" towards Lago di Pilato: exposed sections. You need to have a firm and sure step. In this section of Le Roccette, those who …

A fantastic route in the heart of the Sibillini Mountains. This loop is recommended for those with a good level of fitness and who aren't too prone to steep climbs. After the Zilioli refuge, on the way to Cima Prato Pulito, there's a fairly exposed section that's not suitable for everyone, but the breathtaking views along the entire ridge line …
