Frequently Asked Questions

How challenging is the Monte Cruz de Motrico circular hike?

This trail is considered a moderate hike. While much of it is manageable, be prepared for some short but demanding sections, especially during the ascent to the summit. These parts can be quite steep and sometimes slippery, including firebreaks that add to the challenge.

Where does the trail start and is there parking available?

The trail conveniently starts from the recreational area of Merenderos de San Juan del Monte. This area is a popular gathering spot, so you should find parking facilities there. It's also a great place to begin your adventure.

What kind of terrain will I encounter on this route?

You'll experience a diverse range of terrain. The path includes mountain paths, forest trails, and some paved sections near the start. Expect to walk through areas flanked by centenary holm oaks, and later, a thick scrubland of kermes oaks, strawberry trees, and boxwood. The final ascent to the summit involves small, steep, and sometimes slippery paths.

What are the main points of interest or viewpoints along the route?

The most prominent feature is the 10-meter-high metallic cross at the summit, known as Cruz de Motrico, which offers impressive panoramic views. Along the way, you'll also find the "Miradores de San Juan del Monte," providing views over the Cárcavas ravine. From the summit, you can see the Ebro basin, the Montes Obarenes, the city of Miranda de Ebro, and parts of Álava.

Is the trail dog-friendly?

Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, given the diverse terrain, including steep and potentially slippery sections, ensure your dog is fit for the hike and always keep them on a leash for their safety and to protect local wildlife.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

Spring and autumn are generally the best times to hike this trail, offering pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery. During these seasons, the vegetation is lush, and the weather is typically more stable for hiking. Summer can be hot, and winter might present icy conditions on steeper sections.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee to hike in Montes Obarenes-San Zadornil Natural Park?

No, you do not need a permit or have to pay an entrance fee to hike this trail within the Montes Obarenes-San Zadornil Natural Park. However, always respect the natural environment, stay on marked paths, and follow any local regulations regarding waste and fire prevention.

Does this trail intersect with other paths?

Yes, this circular route intersects with and utilizes sections of other paths. You will find yourself on parts of the Camino del Campazo and the Camino de Las Rastrillas during your hike.

What kind of wildlife or plants might I see?

The trail passes through dense vegetation, including ancient holm oaks, kermes oaks, strawberry trees, and boxwood. Keep an eye out for griffon vultures soaring overhead, as they are often spotted in the area. The diverse flora and fauna are part of the charm of the Montes Obarenes-San Zadornil Natural Park.

Are there any specific recommendations for hiking this route?

While the trail is generally well-signposted, especially from the Portillo zone, it's always a good idea to carry a map or use a GPS device. The starting point at Merenderos de San Juan del Monte is a popular spot for local festivals, so if you prefer a quieter experience, you might want to check local event calendars to avoid peak celebration times.

Is this a loop trail or an out-and-back route?

This is a circular route, meaning you will start and end at the same point, the Merenderos de San Juan del Monte, without retracing your steps for the majority of the hike.

- Garmin data: 2:03h total time, 360m total difference in altitude. - Video of the relief route: https://www.relive.cc/view/v36APdBk7GO - NOTE: there is a large part of forest tracks, which are not very popular and sometimes you find bikes going down very fast, but it also has a mountain trail area with a steep slope and very cool to do. And the views from above are spectacular.
