Froggatt Edge

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Great spot to look over the valley below and take in the view. Even when the valley is full of mist it still makes a good picture.

View from Curbar Edge

Highlight • Viewpoint

Curbar Edge is a gritstone escarpment that affords spectacular views. With rocks to scramble upon, moorland trails, picnic spots, scenic woodlands, plus more, there’s plenty to explore. It's one of the only places in the Peak District where you can observe adders, too (take care with dogs).

The light here can be wonderfully cinematic, especially at sunrise and sunset. All in all, a fantastic place to explore and admire the varied landscapes of the Peak District.

Eagle Stone

Highlight • Climb

The Eagle Stone is a well-weathered block of gritstone that is steeped in local folklore. Apparently, local men had to climb the stone to demonstrate their eligibility to marry. These days, it’s a popular bouldering spot with spectacular panoramic views.

Gardom's Edge Cup Stone

Highlight • Historical Site

Gardom's Edge is one of the quieter edges, not shown as a public right of way on OS Maps but is in access land so your free to explore at will. Great views from the Edge and somewhere there is a Bronze Age cup stone and carved rock, which I am led to believe is a replica to one that was here when it was created 1000's of years ago. I have not yet found it myself .

White Edge

Highlight • Natural

Along White Edge is less-walked trail that runs parallel to the Curbar and Froggatt Edge trail. Adding this section to make a circuit walk gives you double the views and double the edges. What's not to like?

Trail Reviews

MBB
March 30, 2024, Curbar Edge, Froggatt Edge and White Edge Circular

An enjoyable route with lovely views without having to climb!

One of our favourite walks as a quick get us out, but today was made all the more interesting with the recent heavy snowfall. Thigh deep drifts in places, snow covered paths and streams made for an exciting, if not at times, more physically challenging and full of surprises 😀. When walking in the snow, every step was a guess how far you were going to sink and if there'd be water at the bottom. A great time was had by both of us, it was a case of when you get snow like this you've just got to get out in it.

With the heatwave having eased, I headed up to the Peak District with my Dad to make the most of a cooler evening. When it was 40 degrees on Monday I couldn’t imagine ever wearing a fleece again! It was maximum views for minimum effort on this loop around Baslow, White, Froggatt and Curbar Edges. We hiked but would make for an ideal run, with hardly any climbing. The route felt really varied, from super dry open moorland to jungle vibes in the overgrown ferns, and sections of woodland too. Endless standing-on-a-big-rock photo opportunities depending on how brave you are! We stopped on a rock for dinner (a picnic and flask of tea) before heading home. There's currently high fire risk across the moors so make sure you look out for signs restricting accessing and warning against naked flames.

Not sure why the route stopped where it did. But to finish the walk, just follow the edge along until you hit the car park again.

Amazing Walk today exploring the rugged and dramatic landscapes of 4 Peak District Edges. Stunning views, herds of cows on Froggatt Edge (beautiful), and no rain. Perfect!
