Hiking

Explore the unique volcanic landscape of the Crateri Silvestri on this moderate 2.1-mile (3.3 km) loop. You will gain about 375 feet (114 metres) in elevation, taking around 1 hour and 3 minutes to complete. The trail immerses you in a lunar environment of solidified lava, black sand, and volcanic bombs, offering panoramic views of Mount Etna's summit cones, the Ionian Sea, and the Catania coast. While the main path is generally easy, some sections leading to the upper crater can be steep and occasionally slippery due to sandy soil.

This trail starts conveniently from Rifugio Sapienza, making it easily reachable by both car and public transport. The loop is suitable for most fitness levels, including families with children, but be prepared for varying terrain. Always check local conditions before you go, as the presence of snow or strong winds can affect the trail surface and your experience.

The Crateri Silvestri are particularly notable for their accessibility, allowing you to experience an active volcano's immediate vicinity without an arduous climb to the main summit. These two main craters, Superiori and Inferiori, were formed during a significant eruption in 1892. The route provides a 360-degree viewpoint and showcases the raw geological power of Etna, alongside the gradual return of resilient vegetation like Genista aetnensis and unique fauna such as the rare Etna butterfly.

Sapienza Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Sapienza refuge is the starting point for climbing the crater of Etna, it is also a very famous place for road cycling, as it hosted the arrival of some stages of the Giro d'Italia.

Silvestri Superior Craters

Highlight • Volcano

The Silvestri craters formed after the eruption of 1892. The 2 main parts (superiore and inferiore) are divided by the road, which passes in the middle. This makes them easily accessible, as they are also close to the parking. They are more difficult to reach than "Crateri Silvestri Inferiori" because the Path is steep and, sometimes, slippery. From there you can see the other craters from top.

Silvestri Inferior Craters

Highlight • Volcano

The craters from the 1892 eruption are located right next to the road and are easily accessible from the large parking lot, just a few meters away.
Not quite the raw, pristine experience of the steaming summit region, but with a wonderful interplay of colors between the ground and the emerging vegetation.

Mount Etna

Highlight • Volcano

We circled the middle Grater and wanted to use the cable car to shorten the ascent. Unfortunately only tickets for ascent and descent at a price of 50.00 € per person.
