Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Cañada Gertrudis and Pista Sur Loop start, and is there parking available?

The loop typically starts from Mijas Pueblo, which is a great base for exploring the Sierra de Mijas. You can find parking in and around the village. The Sierra de Mijas trailhead is a common starting point for many routes in the area.

Is this loop suitable for beginner hikers?

While the loop is rated as moderate, some sections, particularly on the Cañada Gertrudis trail, can be technical with loose stones and steep ascents. It requires sure-footedness and good hiking shoes. If you're a beginner, be prepared for varied terrain and elevation changes, and consider your fitness level.

What is the terrain like on the Cañada Gertrudis and Pista Sur Loop?

The terrain is quite varied. You'll encounter mostly accessible paths, singletrack sections, and some natural and alpine elements. The initial ascent from Mijas Pueblo can be steep. The Pista Sur section is generally a well-defined forest road or track, though it can also be steep in parts and may pass through burned pine forests.

What can I see along the route?

You'll be treated to fantastic panoramic views, especially along the Cañada Gertrudis section, looking towards Mijas and Fuengirola, and extending along the coast from Benalmádena to Marbella. Notable viewpoints include the Juan Antonio Gómez Alarcón Viewpoint, Cañada Gertrudis Viewpoint, and the View of Cañada de los Canteros Quarry.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, this loop incorporates sections of several other trails within the Sierra de Mijas. You'll find yourself on parts of the Mijas - Benalmádena trail, the Sendero Cerro Málaga, and the Pista Sur is also recognized as an itinerary within the Great Path of Málaga (GR 249).

Is the Cañada Gertrudis and Pista Sur Loop dog-friendly?

Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in the Sierra de Mijas. However, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially given the varied terrain, potential for wildlife, and to respect other hikers. Ensure you carry enough water for both yourself and your pet.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking in the Sierra de Mijas, offering pleasant temperatures and often clear skies for optimal views. Summers can be very hot, so if hiking then, start early in the morning and carry plenty of water. Winter can also be enjoyable, but be mindful of shorter daylight hours and potentially cooler, windier conditions at higher elevations.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee to hike in the Sierra de Mijas?

No, there are typically no permits required or entrance fees to access the hiking trails in the Sierra de Mijas, including the Cañada Gertrudis and Pista Sur Loop. The area is freely accessible for hikers.

Are there any specific safety considerations for this route?

Given the moderate difficulty and technical sections with loose stones, wearing appropriate hiking shoes with good grip is highly recommended. Always carry enough water, especially during warmer months, and be aware of your surroundings. Some parts of the Pista Sur may lead through areas that have experienced wildfires, so be mindful of the environment.

Are there any cafes or amenities near the trailhead?

Yes, since the loop typically starts and ends in Mijas Pueblo, you'll find a variety of cafes, restaurants, and other amenities in the village. It's a great place to grab a coffee before your hike or enjoy a meal afterward.

What kind of wildlife might I encounter on the trail?

The Sierra de Mijas is home to various Mediterranean wildlife. You might spot birds of prey soaring overhead, and if you're lucky, you could see mountain goats (ibex) on the rocky slopes. The area also has diverse plant life, including pine forests and Mediterranean scrub.

Not really recommended for inexperienced hikers, trails are small and quite stoney. Good shoes required.
