Junction to Monte di Panza and Baia Pelara Trails

Highlight • Trail

Among vineyards and silvery olive trees we will find ourselves in front of a fork: up Monte di Panza and down Pelara bay. Let's go down first to seek relief in the shade and silence of a splendid holm oak grove where nothing suggests the spectacle that we will soon find ourselves in front of. The path continues among ferns and immense agaves until suddenly a gap of blue sea opens up before our eyes between two stratified walls overlooking a bay full of colorful flowers and the black of the lava as a contrast. From here we descend carefully, the lapilli make even the most technical shoes slip! After having reached the bottom of the bay almost until we touch the sea, we go up slowly to head this time to Monte di Panza with a wide-ranging panorama that goes from Capri to Punta Licosa and then closer from Sant'Angelo to Sorgeto.

Monte Panza viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Monte Panza path (capo negro) is easy to follow even without adequate equipment, all you need is a pair of comfortable shoes, while the Pelara path requires suitable shoes.
The emotion that one has when one reaches the viewpoint of Mount Panza is unique for everyone, I think that the word Wow!!! is the most suitable to make people understand the beauty of the place.

What kind of terrain can I expect on this trail?

You'll encounter a diverse landscape. The path winds through shaded wooded areas with oak and holm oak trees, passes through tall bamboo and fruit trees, and can become overgrown with ferns. When is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The best time to hike is typically during the spring (April-June) or early autumn (September-October) when the weather is milder and the vegetation is lush. Summers can be very hot, making the hike more challenging, especially the exposed sections.

Is the Baia della Pelara Trail dog-friendly?

What should I bring for a hike on this trail?

You should bring plenty of water, sturdy hiking shoes or trail trainers with good grip, and sun protection. If you plan to go into the water at the bay, water shoes are advisable due to slippery rocks.

What makes the Baia della Pelara Trail unique?

It's considered a hidden gem, providing a tranquil and less crowded experience compared to other popular spots on Ischia.

Is it safe to descend all the way to Baia della Pelara beach?

Many hikers choose to continue down to the rocky beach, but this section involves scrambling over loose rocks and can be slippery. It's done at your own risk, and good trainers or trail shoes are essential for extra grip.

Is this an out-and-back or a loop trail?

The Baia della Pelara Trail is primarily an out-and-back route. You will return along the same path you took to reach the bay.
