This route was planned by komoot.
The Lamotte Circuit is rated as moderate by komoot. While some sources describe it as easy due to its technical ease and low stamina requirements, it does feature gradual climbs and descents, with an overall elevation change of approximately 120 meters.
The Lamotte Circuit typically takes around 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete, based on komoot's average hiking times. However, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views, it could take between 2.5 to 3 hours.
The circuit starts from the center of Ault, next to the Saint-Pierre church. You can find parking options within the village of Ault to begin your hike.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the Lamotte Circuit. However, it's always best to keep them on a leash, especially when passing through rural areas with livestock or near cliffs, and to respect local regulations.
The trail offers a diverse mix of coastal and rural scenery. You'll enjoy magnificent views of the English Channel from the white chalk cliffs, particularly near La Cise Cliff. The route also passes through the charming Bois de Cise, and you can see Churches in Ault at the start. Keep an eye out for Great views of the cliffs again and again and the Grand chemin côtier.
The Lamotte Circuit can be enjoyed year-round. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful colors, while summer provides longer daylight hours. Winter hikes can be invigorating, but be mindful of potentially muddy paths and stronger winds along the coast.
Yes, the Lamotte Circuit utilizes sections of several other paths. Notably, it covers a significant portion of the Circuit De Lamotte (78%) and the Sentier du Littoral (64%). You'll also find smaller segments of trails like Allée Marie, Allée Germaine, and Sentier des Muses.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Lamotte Circuit or generally within the Parc naturel régional Baie de Somme Picardie Maritime. However, always respect local signage, private property, and environmental regulations.
The terrain is varied, combining coastal paths atop chalk cliffs with rural tracks. You'll encounter gradual climbs and descents, particularly as you head south towards the Bois de Cise. The route also winds through hollow paths bordered by hedges, pastures, and groves, offering a mix of surfaces.
Yes, as the trail starts and ends in the village of Ault, you'll find various amenities such as cafes, restaurants, and shops. It's a typical maritime village, so you can easily find places to refresh before or after your hike.
Given its 'moderate' difficulty rating and manageable distance, the Lamotte Circuit is generally suitable for families with children who are accustomed to hiking. The diverse scenery and coastal views can keep younger hikers engaged. Always consider your children's stamina and the weather conditions.
The way back that we chose is actually forbidden for dogs. In summer, cows roam the pastures here. Now in winter the pastures were open.
Today a walk from Ault (ugly town where nothing happens) and from there along the cliffs to the bois de Cises with its belle epoque villas and houses (faded glory) and so on through country roads to Ault. The walk itself was worth walking but steep and slippery slopes.
The cliffs begin in Ault, the cliffs that extend almost to Le Havre and form the Alabaster Coast. When I think of the white cliffs, I often think of the Kent coast, the Seven Sisters, or Dover... Next year I'll be heading back to my beloved England. Today we had a little taste of it here in Picardy. To finish off, of course, we had a cider—no, cider, but with crisps 😆
A beautiful route leads from Ault above the Alabaster Coast to Bois de Cise. We walked a little further, but then turned back because the route continued across fields with little view. As we missed the turnoff to the coastal path on the way there, we wanted to enjoy the way back along the coast even more. And it's really worth it! The views of the steeply sloping limestone cliffs are tremendous. In the direction of Ault, the view opens up to the Bay of Somme, also an incredibly beautiful view. The path is easy to walk, with no technical difficulties. On the coastal path there are one or two cuts where you have to go down and back up again. These are narrow meadow paths that are quite steep in places. You should be careful. There are no long passages, usually only a few meters. All in all, a great circuit, the views are enchanting. The small village of Ault is also very pretty and in a great location. There are several restaurants and food stalls to give your hiking legs a boost.
