The main Belle-Île Trail race leads to the discovery of the island and its remarkable sites through a loop that goes all the way around it. The route largely follows the GR 340 which runs along the coast while making a few detours inland to discover the villages of Locmaria, Bangor and Sauzon.
The departure is in the center of the Palace, capital of the island. The route leaves the city to embark on the northern coast. This first section leads to the Pointe de Kerdonis and its emblematic lighthouse. Along the way, you pass along the largest beach on the island, that of Grands Sables. A short detour to Locmaria allows you to eat and stock up on supplies before exploring the highest cliffs on Skeul Point.
From then on, you travel the southern coastal paths. You progress on a steeper portion which includes a series of descents and climbs that are sometimes quite steep. However, the incredible beauty of the landscapes accompanies each of these efforts. Points, coves and cliffs never cease to punctuate your progress. You make a slight detour through the village of Bangor which allows you to take another break and stock up on provisions if necessary.
Many emblematic landscapes of the island are available to you, including the unmissable Port-Coton needles. These magnificent rocky points straight out of the water inspired Claude Monet during his visit to Belle-Île-en-Mer. It is also here that you leave the coastline for a moment to begin a section that winds through the heart of the island.
It is at the old semaphore of Er-Hastellic that you find the coastline and never leave it until your return to the Palace. The superb port of Stêr Vraz reveals new grandiose landscapes before reaching the Pointe des Poulains. This marks your return to the north of the island as well as an imminent arrival. You cross Sauzon, the last village before returning to the Palace via a coastal path that is still as beautiful.
