Basilica of Saint Clare, Assisi

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of Santa Chiara is splendid with its decorated rose window and the Romanesque facade with these arches that seem to balance its forms.

The blessed man, who died very young and has now been raised to the "honor of the altars", is particularly venerated in Umbria. The church with his grave is therefore naturally a very special place.

Abbey of Saint Peter

Highlight • Religious Site

This church in Assisi was dedicated to Saint Peter. Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee when he - together with his brother Andrew - was called by Jesus Christ to be "fishers of men". According to Catholic understanding, he is the supreme apostle, and the two millennia-long line of popes - currently Francis - are his successor. On statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted with two keys in his hand; this attribute refers to the biblical saying in Matthew: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Chapter 16, verse 19).
Peter and Paul are also known as the “Princes of the Apostles”; their common feast day in the saints’ calendar is June 29th.

Basilica of Saint Francis

Highlight • Religious Site

The Basilica of San Francesco is a masterpiece of human creative genius, both from an architectural and artistic point of view. The basilica is made up of two superimposed churches (the lower and the upper), as well as a crypt excavated in 1818. The tomb of the Saint is preserved here, a simple sarcophagus resting on the bare rock. Cimabue, Giotto, the Lorenzetti Brothers, Simone Martini: the greatest artists of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries frescoed the walls and ceilings of the basilica.

Piazzetta Don Sigismondo Spagnoli

Highlight • Settlement

A cat lover has to live here, at least there are two street art works of art - sometimes hidden by cars - that are rarely found in Assisi. There is also a wonderful view of the expanse from here. A little further on there is a reference to the German Sisters of Groce, and further down Via Metastasio the tour turns left through the archway.

For many visitors to Assisi, the more well-known destinations are probably the Holy Sepulchre Churches
+ of Saint Francis (see komoot.com/de-de/highlight/138624 ) and
+ of Saint Clara (see komoot.com/de-de/highlight/2665025 ). However, these two churches are more recent (compared to this one).
The ancient, venerable and original main church of the city and thus also of the diocese is of course the cathedral, the seat of the bishop. Francis and Clara, for example, also received the sacrament of baptism in this cathedral, dedicated to Saint RUFINO.

Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva

Highlight • Religious Site

In the middle of the historic center of Assisi, on the market square (the "Piazza del Comune"), stands the church dedicated to the Mother of God with the title "Santa Maria sopra Minerva". In pre-Christian times, a pagan temple stood on this very prominent spot in the city. It was dedicated to the Roman goddess "Minerva", and the additional name of today's minor basilica still reminds us of this.

Trail Reviews

Martina Pradel

After arriving in Assisi, I first look for my accommodation. It's a little out of the way, a 15-minute walk away, a country house with a lovely ambiance as a reward - unfortunately, I didn't bring a swimsuit for the pool. After the usual shower, however, I set off again to explore the city. A bit of a culture shock after the solitude of the walk. As in Florence, groups of visitors of all nationalities wander through the city - souvenir knick-knacks galore...no one needs that!!! Furthermore, a medieval festival has been going on all week. On every corner, people are tinkering, painting, and decorating. Many streets leading to the central square, the Plaza del Comune, are blocked off - cars squeeze through...I wouldn't drive a single step here, it's so narrow. This medieval city has so many nooks and crannies, it's impossible to take in everything, let alone photograph it all. The alleys are connected by stairs, steps, and steep little streets - that's a real workout for my legs and feet. After dinner with my fellow pilgrims, I have to find my way back in the dark – what a surprise, even the smallest alleys are no longer lit, so I have to use the navigation system to find the right way down.
