Embark on an easy hike along the Warkworth loop, a picturesque 2.2-mile (3.5 km) route with a gentle elevation gain of just 119 feet (36 metres). You can complete this scenic journey in about 56 minutes, enjoying accessible paths that wind through diverse terrain. As you hike, you'll be treated to views of the impressive medieval Warkworth Castle overlooking the River Coquet and its estuary, alongside stretches of pristine sandy beaches and large sand dunes.

This trail is suitable for all skill levels and offers a relaxed outdoor experience, making it an attractive option for families. The paths are a mix of natural surfaces, asphalt, and paved sections, ensuring a comfortable walk. Since the route is generally easy and accessible, you can enjoy it without needing special equipment or extensive planning, focusing instead on the beautiful coastal and riverside scenery.

The Warkworth loop is notable for its rich historical significance, combining the natural beauty of the Northumberland Coast with landmarks like Warkworth Castle and the unique 14th-century Warkworth Hermitage. This versatile route, which blends coastal walking with riverside paths and village exploration, was even voted 55th in a 2017 ITV poll for "Britain's Favourite Walk."

Warkworth Castle

Highlight • Historical Site

Lying atop a steep hilltop above the river Croquet, Warkworth castle is an impressive fortress with towered walls that remain largely intact. Built in the 12th century, the castle had famous owners such as the Percy family who were one of the most powerful families in the North at the time. Their son 'Harry Hotspur' was a character in Henry IV by Shakespeare.

Today, you can visit the castle from 10am to 6pm daily. Tickets for adults cost £7.20. The castle also hosts various events such as medieval myths and legends. You can find more information, here: english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/warkworth-castle-and-hermitage.

Warkworth Hermitage

Highlight • Historical Site

This is a 14th century Hermitage carved out of the bedrock on the River Coquet. Warkworth Hermitage can only be visited by rowing boat and the trips only run during the Spring and Summer months.

You can purchase tickets for the Hermitage from Warkworth Castle, and amazingly it is free if you are an English Heritage member, or £6.20 for non-members as of April 2022.
