Hiking

Embark on the challenging Path of the Gods, a difficult hike spanning 12.1 miles (19.4 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3752 feet (1143 metres). This route typically takes around 7 hours and 47 minutes to complete. As you traverse the trail, you will experience varied terrain, moving through fragrant Mediterranean scrub, past ancient farmlands, and alongside terraced vineyards. The atmosphere is one of ancient beauty, offering expansive views of the deep blue sea and the stunning Amalfi Coast. Keep an eye out for the iconic Faraglioni rocks of Capri island in the distance, a truly memorable sight.

When planning your hike, consider starting from Bomerano, as this popular section of the route towards Nocelle is mostly downhill. Be prepared for a substantial descent if you continue from Nocelle into Positano, as this involves navigating between 1,700 and 1,800 steps, which can be demanding on your knees. Alternatively, if you choose to begin your journey from Praiano, expect a steep ascent of approximately 1,900 steps just to reach the main trail. Factor in these considerations to best enjoy your experience on the Path of the Gods.

The Path of the Gods is renowned for its unique perspectives of the valleys below and the captivating Archipelago of the Sirens. This trail offers more than just physical exertion; it provides a journey through a landscape rich with history and natural beauty. You will encounter a blend of Mediterranean flora and ancient agricultural practices, giving you a sense of the region's enduring heritage. It stands out as a quintessential Amalfi Coast experience, connecting you directly with the dramatic coastal scenery.

The small inhabited center is truly suggestive and characteristic, it is the starting point for the famous Path of the Gods, which I recommend doing in reverse, i.e. starting from Bomerano and arriving in Nocelle. The route is a false plan starting from Nocelle, in reality it is all uphill with large rocks to pass over. The ground is predominantly humid, therefore very slippery and absolutely not to be walked on with unsuitable shoes. The beauty of the wetland habitat is breathtaking. Ferns of multiple species, orchids and a small stream near a field of stone cairns! Best avoided with or after rain.

Named after its geologic formation, similar to the shape of a biscuit bread (typical product of Agerola): Cool cave and rock buildings clinging to the cliff hanging over the edge of the mountain when leaving Bomerano on the Path of Gods: great start.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to hike this trail?

The full hike from Bomerano to Positano, including the descent into Positano, generally takes around 7 to 8 hours. This includes time for enjoying the views and taking breaks. The section from Bomerano to Nocelle is shorter and less strenuous.

Where are the main trailheads and how can I access them?

The most popular starting point is in Bomerano, a village in Agerola. You can reach Bomerano by public bus (SITA Sud) from Amalfi. The trail officially ends in Nocelle, a hamlet above Positano. From Nocelle, you can either take a local bus down to Positano or descend the approximately 1,700 steps directly into Positano. Parking in Bomerano can be limited, so public transport is often recommended.

What is the best time of year to hike the Path of the Gods?

The ideal times are spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) when the weather is mild and the landscapes are lush. Summer can be very hot, making the hike more challenging, especially with exposed sections. Winter offers cooler temperatures but some services might be reduced, and weather can be unpredictable.

Is the trail suitable for dogs?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the Path of the Gods. However, it's crucial to keep them on a leash, especially due to narrow paths, rocky sections, and potential encounters with other hikers or local wildlife. Ensure your dog is fit enough for the varied terrain and bring plenty of water for them, as sources can be scarce.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required to hike in Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Path of the Gods, as it is a public trail within the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari. However, always respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural beauty of the park.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the route?

The trail features varied terrain, including rocky paths, ancient stone steps, and dirt tracks winding through Mediterranean scrub, terraced vineyards, and shaded forested areas. While generally well-maintained, some sections have exposure along cliffs. The route from Bomerano to Nocelle is predominantly downhill, but the descent from Nocelle to Positano involves a significant number of steps.

What are the main highlights and viewpoints along the way?

You'll encounter numerous breathtaking sights. Key highlights include the Start of the Path of the Gods in Bomerano, ancient Rupestrian Houses, and stunning panoramic View of the Amalfi Coast and Positano. Don't miss the View across the valley to Nocelle and the charming Nocelle village and view of the Amalfi Coast. You might also spot the View of Monte Gambera's rock arch.

Does this route intersect with other trails?

Yes, the route primarily follows the 'Path of gods' trail for a significant portion. It also intersects with sections of other official trails such as 'Variante alta del Sentiero degli Dei', 'Sentiero alto degli dei', and 'Civitella', offering alternative paths or extensions for those looking to explore further.

Are there places to eat or get refreshments along the trail?

While the trail itself is mostly natural, you'll find options in the villages at either end. In Nocelle, there's 'The Knots of the Path of the Gods' (Chiosco del Sentiero degli Dei), a popular spot for refreshments. Both Bomerano and Positano offer a wider selection of cafes, restaurants, and shops.

What's the best direction to hike the Path of the Gods?

Most hikers recommend starting in Bomerano and hiking towards Nocelle/Positano. This direction is largely downhill, making the overall experience less strenuous. Hiking in the opposite direction (from Positano/Nocelle up to Bomerano) involves a significant uphill climb, including many steps, which is considerably more challenging.

What should I bring for the hike?

Essential items include sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support, plenty of water (especially in warmer months), sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), snacks, and a first-aid kit. A camera is a must for the incredible views. Trekking poles can be helpful for the rocky sections and the descent into Positano.

Trail Reviews

Thomas Leitner
March 19, 2025, Amalfiküste Etappe 4: Weg der Götter und Frühjahrs-Touristentrubel

Today was something of a rest day. Since our host was born in Cologne, we even had a "decent" and varied breakfast. We started relatively late (in the shade at about 5 degrees Celsius – but luckily the sun was already shining on most stretches). Then we turned onto the "Path of the Gods." However, we shared it with ten times more tourists than in the previous three days combined. And finally, we ended up in Positano. Or, more precisely, before that, since Positano, for reasons unknown to us, is twice as expensive as even Amalfi. Then we took the bus down (climbing 350 meters of stairs is no fun). And the bus ride was a truly exceptional experience. If you hear driving on the back roads in a rental car, it's your own fault. But on the bus, it's fine. We still don't understand what people like about the place.

We had been looking forward to the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) for a long time and today the weather was mostly good. Even though the sun only shone occasionally, we were able to enjoy the panoramic route with views over the Amalfi Coast to the Bay of Salerno. Because the route is very popular with hikers, you rarely hike alone. The descent to Positano with its many stone steps is a real challenge. Here we encounter a completely different world: an incredible number of tourists, stylish and equipped with lots of purchases from the boutiques. The place with its immaculately decorated houses in different colors makes a beautiful picture and is definitely worth a visit.

The hike doesn't seem long in terms of distance, but it's quite challenging due to the nature of the path, which is why it takes over 4 hours. We took the ferry to Positano and from there the steps to Montepertusa. Nice place, few tourists, easy to walk, just the typical steps. Past the hole rock. The path to Nocelle first goes uphill through the forest, then through a fairly overgrown path with lots of loose stones. From Nocelle the actual hike of the gods begins, the biggest challenge being to avoid oncoming groups of tourists. The path is not difficult to walk, but you need good shoes as you also have to overcome stones. In the middle the path divides into a lower one (which most tourists walk) and an upper one. From here on, safety is really required, as the path is partly on a slope, without fastenings and in some areas that are softened by the rain. Please no glitter sandals or white sneakers!!! Bomerano is worth a stop

There were a lot of people on this tour. This wasn't for me because there was too much pushing. The landscape was very beautiful and varied.

Today we went from Bomerano to Positano on the sentiero degli dei, the path of the gods, in perfect weather. Breathtakingly beautiful, so there was a lot going on. In Positano I couldn't resist the temptation and opened the sea bathing season.

What a beautiful day 🥰 In the morning we drove to Angerola 🚙 - to the start of the "Path of the Gods" We were surprised not only by the free parking space, but also by the large number of hikers who obviously also wanted to walk this well-known path. So we headed towards Positano via the "divine path". This winds along the coast at high altitudes, so that you can enjoy many great views. Basically you go downhill, but individual sections also require small climbs. After about 10 km we reached the totally overcrowded Positano in bright sunshine ☀️. So we unpacked towels and took a break on the beach. We actually wanted to take the bus back to the starting point. The many people at the stops influenced our decision to hike back on foot. The first few hundred meters of altitude had to be overcome by climbing steps, which was a bit of a challenge for the legs 😢 We were compensated by the fact that the path was quite empty in the afternoon 😍 We happily arrived in Bomerano in the early evening. Komoot miscounted the total altitude...it was over 1000 😉 Nevertheless, it is definitely a recommendable path...as you can hopefully see from the pictures.
