Cycling

Embark on a diverse touring bicycle loop through the Peak District National Park, starting from Tissington. This moderate 27.6 miles (44.4 km) route, typically completed in 3 hours and 21 minutes, features a total elevation gain of 1264 feet (385 metres). You will cycle along the Tissington Trail, known for its smooth, compacted gravel surface and views of rolling hills and lush fields. The route then connects to the High Peak Trail, offering expansive panoramic views across dramatic limestone countryside and open moorland. Finally, the Carsington Water section provides lovely views across the reservoir, surrounded by woodlands and wildflower meadows, though be prepared for undulating terrain and some rocky or muddy sections. The trail verges along the High Peak Trail are particularly vibrant with wildflowers in spring and summer.

This loop is rated moderate, demanding a reasonable level of fitness, especially for the challenging inclines on the High Peak Trail like Hopton and Sheep Pasture, where you might choose to dismount and push. The Carsington Water section also features several short, steep uphill and downhill sections, making a bike with gears essential. While the Tissington Trail is mostly flat and accessible, it does have a relatively steep incline at Mappleton. Cycle hire facilities are conveniently available at key points such as Parsley Hay, Middleton Top, and the Carsington Water Visitor Centre.

This route stands out for its use of historical railway paths, with both the High Peak and Tissington Trails being former railway lines converted into traffic-free recreational routes. The High Peak Trail, built between 1825 and 1830, was one of the world's first long-distance railways and features historical infrastructure like the Middleton Top Engine House. The Tissington Trail also preserves a restored signal box at Hartington. The majority of the route is traffic-free, offering a safe and enjoyable cycling environment away from roads, and both trails are integral parts of the UK's National Cycle Network.

Bradbourne Brook Ford

Highlight • Bridge

Fun for the fool hardy, slow and steady. Can be deep, be prepared to bail if your bike starts to slide out from under. At your own risk🚲😬. Bridge for the sensible 😉

Bradbourne Village

Highlight • Historical Site

A "doubly thankful" village. A thankful village is one where none of the inhabitants were killed in the First World War. A doubly thankful one is where no inhabitants were killed in either the First or Second World Wars.
Either there weren't many soldiers from Bradbourne or they were very lucky.
The apparent war memorial is actually a commemoration of Queen Victoria's 60 years on the throne.
A nice scenic village but no facilities such as shops, cafes or pubs.

Carsington Water

Highlight • Lake

If you are looking for an easier life cycle around the reservoir anticlockwise as this way you get the harder part out of the way in the first half of the ride and have an easier end to the ride when you might not have so much energy left.

High Peak Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The High Peak Trail runs from Cromford to Parsley Hay. It is built on the route of a railway which itself was built by a canal company. They used the canal method of long flat sections joined by steep sections (as with locks on the canal). This means that the High Peak Trail has a couple of hills that are much steeper (about 1:12) than you would expect on a railway. All traffic free.

Great for families so long as you are careful on the downhill sections. There are refreshments at each end and at Middleton Top, the National Stone Centre and others along the way. Can be used as part of a circular route including the Tissington Trail and a link route between the Tissington Trail and Carsington Reservoir.

Tissington Trail

Highlight • Cycleway

The Tissington Trail is a 13-mile (21 km) traffic-free trail that links Ashbourne to Parsley Hay via the spectacular White Peak countryside. The compacted gravel trail is relatively smooth and flat (save for a relatively steep incline at Mappleton), making it a great ride for all ages and abilities. The Tissington Trail is part of a network of former railway lines in this area that are now recreational routes, meaning the exploration options are plentiful.

The trail follows the former Buxton to Ashbourne railway line, which opened in 1899 and closed in 1967. After its closure, the route was transformed into a trail and opened to the public in 1971.

Trail Reviews

Started the tour at Carsington Water Derbyshire. Camped close to the visitors centre and cycled west on national cycle route 547 to Tissington. There pick up the Tissington Trail an old railway line and head north to Parsley Hay. Here is a cafe, cycle hire and parking. You then head Easterly on the High Peak Trail cycle way. This will take you all the way to Cromford but i left that trail and took national cycle route 547 down to Carsington and the reservoir. Then followed the reservoir's trail back to the visitors centre and my camper. All in all a lovely few hours in some of the best scenery in the UK. If you have good weather.

Longest tour to date 32 miles From high peak trail to carsington water all good and then to tissington was hard work , plenty of hills and from tissington back to parsley hay was really tough, slight incline all the way , was knackered by the the finish. Sunny mist of the day and quiet breezy on return loop.
