This route was planned by komoot.
There were times when I thought I was on a different planet. The clouds would rush up the mountain and meet us at the edge where the trail meets the ridge. And all of a sudden you were in thick fog. Like Scotland. So many shepherds up there with cattle high up. There were forts and abandoned villages from the 1800. And communication stations that used mirrors to communicate with the other settlements. 33 degrees in Aosta and must have been 8 or 9 up there. We get up to the gold sweet spot where the ride would be flat for a while and the trail is blocked from rock fall. Beware if you do this ride! So we have to push our bikes up goat trails to meet up to the main trail again. I couldn't do it alone. The ride down was the reward. I LOVED this ride.
Amusing ring that with the departure from Pian dell Alpe reduces the height difference to 1200 D+, I point out only for the uninitiated, that just before the Colle della Vecchia due to a landslide, blocks were placed to prevent the passage (see photo ), you can switch bikes or walk up a path just before the boulders.
Shortly before the Colle della Vecchia there is a landslide. Or you pass with some risk 🥺🥺o shortly before there is a GTA path to bike on your shoulder, safer but it's 50 meters tough
No technical difficulty on this very rolling course, but a prohibited military road, which is not reassuring in the event of a glitch, and very many clouds (privilege the morning perhaps less foggy) have somewhat altered the pleasure of this ride. Remember to bring a windbreaker because the weather changes quickly at these altitudes ...
Unfortunately, the old woman's pass has no longer been passable by bike since July 22nd. Portage on the CAI path, signposted, short but tough!
Description, detailed altimetry and updated track here: https://nest.bike/itineraries-mountainbike-routes/itinerary/cima-ciantiplagna/
The stretch in the Colle della Vecchia area is always closed, easily bypassed with a 10 minute portage. The portage climb to Cima Ciantiplagna is worth it, there is a spectacular 360 degree view. To date there are some very short stretches on snow but they are easily overcome. And without risk.
Nice ride but the path is closed a little before reaching the hill of the windows but in any case you pass beware of danger
